I need a Fan for NB heatsink - DFI Infinity 975X/G

Hi guys,

I'm putting a C2D system together like everyone else in the world. My CPU isn't here yet, but I want a better cooling for my 975X NB than the passive HS on the mobo.

Anyone know what size fan (30, 40, 50 mm???) I should get to stick on top of this HS? (I measured it about 1 10/16" sqaure) See this DFI 975X/G mobo pic. I'm using a Scythe Mine cooler, so I think I will only have about 1/2 - 3/4 inch clearance above the NB HS for a fan.
(Check out these pics of the scythe mine on a mobo -- not my mobo -- looks like this has slightly less clearance than my DFI.

Also, see that other chip in the lower left on the DFI picDFI pic? I assume it's southbridge? What's that finny grey pad? Should I take it off and put a heatsink/fan? (

I did see some really nice offset copper NB coolers mentioned in a thread here, but they're $25-$30, which is out of my range for this project.

Also, any tips on mounting it to that type of HS would be appreciated!

Well, since my measurement of the HS came kinda close to 40mm, that's what I ordered. Dunno how to make it stick, but hopefully I'll find a way.

BTW, does it void your warranty on a mobo if you replace the NB or SB heatsinks?

I believe with DFI changing the Chipset cooler doesn't void the warrenty as long as you don't damage the die.

Well, if anybody was reading this thread, I got a 40mm fan, but it's a bit small. I think 50mm would be just fine.

As to the warranty, looking at the manual, looks like it does void it to me.
