any of the ati card support dvd decoding. average cost is about <$100. the new Radeon 8500 64meg retail can be had for ~$140. search the hot deal forum for more info.

what about the visiontek geforce2 gts-v for $53 shipped (add tax if in CA) at newegg.com? decent card.. i bet even older cards go for about the same price or just a few bucks less.. and this is a decent performer..

here's a 380 post thread on the card..

when i first posted this thread this morning, newegg.com had the ATI Xpert 2000 Pro w/32MB and TV-OUT for $29 + $5 shipping...it's now out of stock...

i think that's a pretty old card but i really only do word processing and internet on my computer...so gaming is a nonissue...the VISIONTEK Xtasy 5632 GEFORCE2 GTS-V card is $19 more...and i don't think it does hardware dvd decoding...should i wait until newegg restocks the ATI card? any more suggestions would be really helpful...TIA

PS how long does it usually take newegg to restock anyway?

the gts-v will do...but personally I'd get the radeon 7000....it's basically a radeon ve...and I think the radeon 7000 supports hardware dvd decoding...if it doesn't...then I'd go for the radeon 7200...

im not sure about hardware decoding.. but i use my duron 800 with my first gen. geforce1 ddr and plays dvds fine.. i dont see why the gts-v would have a problem with playing dvds unless it's a really underpowered pc.. i even ran it on my celeron 466/geforce 1 ddr with no prob..

get the lowest priced Radeon you can find. All radeon's have the same rage3d Theatre cchipset, thus supporting hardware DVD Decoding. WHen ppl say Radeon cards have better DVD decoding, it's because of that. Often, it looks betters (better color saturation, etc), and smoother with less chances of error. Since the GeForce cards don't have a hardware decoder, it's better to get a Radeon, (or even a Rage Pro if it has the theatre chipset, which it might, not sure).
