I need a case!

Like the title says, I need a case. I found this one at directron: Directron. It is the Antec SLK3700AMB, and with UPS ground shipping to delaware, it is $83 total. Is this a good case? Are there any other good cases with NICE power supplies for under $90 shipped? I bought a generic flashy window case about a year ago, and I highly regret it (the front fans have no vents, so they hardly draw air, even with the metal grate cut out, and the PSU is a piece of sh!t). So thanks for any opinions I get.

The Antec 3700's are nice, they come with a high-quality Antec SmartPower dual-fan 350W PSU that has a three-year warranty (and they actually back it, too). You can also get that case in black now, if you want. The color of the 3700AMB is sort of a metallic grey with maybe a faint tinge of bronze.

The 3700's also have a 120mm rear cooling fan, and a vacancy for another 120mm in the front if desired.

There's a thread in Hot Deals for an antec Sonata for 80. That's a case with a reputation for good cooling with low noise. I have a Thermaltake Xaser II and it's ok for cooling. I'd stay away from the vantec Stealth PSU though, it makes my unit sound like an aircraft!!

Do you have a model number for the black one? I would rather have black, but I tried searching for SLK3700, and SLK3700BLK and can't find anything!

hey i have the slk3700amb, got it for around 60 bucks w/shipping (just use pricewatch to find a good price). Main reason i bought it was because it was stylish (not gaudy) and came with a 350 watt psu. cant beat that for 60 bux. I've got 2 120's for moving air and will be putting in some ys tech's that move more air today. btw, in no way is this case bronze, its more of a grey and looks very sexy (mirror like glossy finish is a nice touch as well). for the price you cannot beat this case.

I think I like the gray (AMB) one better. I really thought I would like the black, but there is something about the design that makes the grayish look better. Also, the gray is about $16 cheaper ($82 vs $98). But thanks anyway! Also, I saw the Sonota has been on sale at Staples and Circuit City for $100 after MIR, so I'm gonna see what deals there are tomorrow (tommorrow is sunday). If there aren't any good deals, then I'll go with the SLK3700.

That looks just like my Antec Lanboy only black... and no cool blue light in the PS

I have a question about the fan grates on these cases. Do they need to be cut out? Cause in my cheap azz case the fans would make an annoying whirring sound, so i cut out the fan grates and put regular finger guards in their place and the whirring stopped.

I'm using this version of the same case. This is the exact same case only with a different bezel and color of course.

I noticed the same whirring you talked about, and yes, cutting out the grills took care of it.

Well how I did it may not be the best solution, but I've used this method several times before with very good results although it is quite time consuming.

I take a pair of tin snips and cut out the grill leaving a complete, or as near complete ring of holes remaining around the perimeter as I can.

I then take and carefully snip out the webs between the holes leaving a single web remaining as the sole attachment to the case itself on that one small piece.

I have a really small pair of pliers with the jaws set on an angle to the handles. I carefully position the jaws of the pliers at the point where I wish to break off that piece. It takes only a few back and forth rocking movements of the pliers to break off that piece. It leaves a surprisingly clean break.

After removing every piece from the outer perimeter, I take a half-round file and dress down any sharp edges remaining. I carefully tape off inside using heavy paper to catch any filings, and use a shop vac before removing the paper and then the vac one last time.

There is still some distortion around the opening so it is not the best way to do the job. But I've used this method several times with the entire system still assembled.

I've got an air compressor, die grinder and carbide burrs which really do a clean job, but I am too lazy to disassemble a system once it's already in the case. On those really restrictive looking grates, where I know it will have to come out. I use the die grinder first off.

I just used tin snipers for my crap case I have now, but I will probably find some way to smooth out the opening with this new case.

the tin snips + file sounds like a good idea, i'll look into that. not sure about the whine but if it will decrease my case noise and airflow then i'm all for it

Well I finally made a decision to buy the SLK3700AMB from NewEgg, shown here NewEgg. It is $18 shipping to DE, so the total comes to $80. It makes me mad though that a year ago I was stupid enough to pay $90 for my POS case and generic PSU! But oh well, live and learn!

I have both a Sonata and 1080 and prefer the quietness and size of the Sonata. Yeah the 1080 has lots of room, but the Sonata is nicely laid out with about the same drive capacity and I think better cooling.
