Hey there, I am in need of a new modem. I love CS so I'm trying to find a *REALLY* awsome gaming modem with the lowest pings possible. Someone told me about the Diamond Supra Express 56K V.90 External Data/Fax PC Modem and said that it was top of the line, is this true?. USR used to have a modem that was optimized for gaming, are there any gaming optimized 56k modems out there?, Thanks

I have U.S. Robotics Performance Pro modem, which (supposedly)has a special gaming mode. Too bad I can't the damn thing to work in Windows XP:( Works fine in my Windows 98SE system, but I don't see any gaming mode, lol. And to top it off, my modem speed went down 8,000 bps when using this modem, compared to my normal old U.S.R. modem. And yes, I used the drivers on the installation CD......It's probably lurking on the CD somewhere, I'm just too lazy to find out how to enable it.

I had no problems with my External USR 56k Hardware modem when I used it.
I just attached it to a serial port and it worked great in Mandrake 7.2, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
All drivers were installed by the OSs too.

Get one of those Zoom V.92 modems. I have an LT modem I was able to hack to v.92 and I ping many CS severs at 180 and below, even getting several in the 140-150 range.

<< throw out the modem and get cable or DSL its the only way to go >>

Any seasoned gamer with sanity would opt for high-speed IF available. The fact remains that the majority of the populus still CAN'T get high speed Internet! For most neighborhoods, it requires costly infrastructure workarounds and upgrades (this is mostly because telcos and cable companies didn't think to plan ahead). For cable, you need a hybrid fiber-coaxial network installed in CO's. DSL technology is often roadblocked by DLC's (digital loop carriers) installed years ago in suburban neighborhoods. Hell, I was FINALLY able to get DSL a few months ago and it's almost 2002!

The whole "best modem" argument has been revisted far too many times to count. I would suggest reading Modus's informative FAQ. It covers a lot about saving money on modems and not submitting to marketing gimmicks.

I prefer external modems. Most ISPs don't support v.92 yet (and probably won't in the short term) so that's irrelevant. www.compgeeks.com has two external modems (Elsa and Diamond) for less than $30. each. I have had very bad luck with Zoom externals. Neither the Zoom v.90 nor the Hayes Accura v.92 (now made by zoom) would reliably download a long file. I have had no problem with any other brand (Best, USR, Viking, Cnet, Creative, etc...) on the same machine.

In my experience Internal/External hard modems and WinModems offer very similar pings. Its not your modem which usually affects pings - more blame has to go with the line quality etc. I personally would not spend extra money on a high quality, brand name modem, my friend spent about 5 times as much as I did on an external 'gaming' modem - my WinModem performs just as good.

If you are really serious about gaming get rid of the modem and go with Broadband or something.

agreed... 56k and 'gaming' dont belong in the same sentence

That said, i've had good luck with usr courier external modem (it was the last modem before i went dsl)
I managed to get consistant 120 ping in counterstrike in an empty server with that externam 56k modem... it was after many many hours of testing and tweaking ;)

I have the Diamond external Supra Express (serial) modem and it's nice. It's about as good as it gets, without getting a more expensive modem with line testing/conditioning. That's when the modem actively seeks out the best path from node to node for the best pings. Last time I knew they were more than $200.

For you guys who are stuck with modems. You may want to contact your ISP and see if they support Shotgunning modems. If they support it they configure your account to allow the use of two modems at once. Once your account is set up you go ahead and install the second modem. Once installl a new box called multilink will appear. you configure the dialing series and your done. I did this until just recently. C.S. and Delta Force played quite a bit better at 104k

Oh by the way, On the left coast SoftCom.net supports shotgunning modems. Another thing is make sure the person you talk to knows what they are talking about at your ISP. Shotgunning is not widely known by the people working the counter. I had to ask for a manager who set my account up while the counter girl looked on dumbfounded!!!
