I've got 2 callbacks in the past month while casually job hunting. Before it has always been my policy to screen the calls so that I can reread the job listing and be better prepared for the call when I get back to them.

Both times I've called back, got their voicemail, left a message and heard nothing back. They both had specifically said they wanted to schedule an interview. One called on a Sunday even.

Not even an email saying they'd found someone else. Seems sort of tacky. Anyone else experience the same thing?

They were probably screening your call so they could reread your resume and be better prepared to realize they didn't actually want to call you in the first place.

Many, many times. Unfortunately, this seems to be standard procedure when hiring these days. Out of the 100 jobs I applied for (yes, I actually did before getting my current part time POS and going back to school), only one company had the decency to send me a letter telling me I didn't get the job. I agree it's definitely unprofessional to leave people hanging. Still, I guess people were getting just too many applicants but sending a standard form letter via mass email isn't hard.
