So a few months ago I swapped out the OEM 2x512 sticks for a set of 2x1GB sticks in my Macbook, and that was quite a pain, in spite of how simple the mechanism looks and the Youtube videos showed...two friends and I back then spent half an hour trying to figure out the retention mechanism and finally got them put in.

Fast forward to now: bought a stick of 2GB DDR2 and swapped out the 2x1GB (for another laptop in the family), and had to go through the same thing again...urgh, oh wells, at least I now have 2.5GB of memory (put in one of the OEM sticks back plus the new 2GB).

Nothing much, I was just puzzled on how exactly I built dozens of computers and upgraded countless components, overclocked systems, and tweaked the hell out of them yet couldn't manage a seemingly simple task of swapping out memory in a Macbook.

Yeah, it was difficult the first time I swapped memory because it takes much more force than you expect. I thought the sticks of ram were going to break!

I didn't have any issues with installing ram. I was just afraid of breaking the 2 pulleys :-x

If its similar to my Macbook Pro, there are a couple of TINY little tabs on the side that hold the memory securely. Moving a little tab to the side freed it up and the memory pretty much pops out. Not much force needed. Not sure if the Macbook is different.

Removal isnt the tough part...it's the insertion part.

The MacBook is completely different. You have two levers that you pull to have the RAM pop out of its socket, and then you simply press the new RAM in. No little catches to worry about.

now that the ram is no longer is dual channel mode your macbook is probably slower than before, espeically the video card.

but yes it does take a surprising amount of force to get the SODIMMS in
