I must be crazy, but I think I'm gonna buy it.

Hey all,

Man, this is killing me. I never thought I would be saying the words.... But I think I'm gonna break down and buy a Canon XL1. :Q Man. That's one HELL of a cam. I've used one before on a production, and it's just too amazing. The way I'm looking at it right now, if i'm gonna get a mini-dv cam, I can either get some chincy little palm-sized $600.00 camera, or I can get a professional-level camera that I will never look at and think "Damn...I should have spent a little more cash and gotten a little more camera." Anyone else backing me up on this? I guess the next order of business would be to find one on sale cheap somewhere...Any suggestions?
The base price to beat is around $3,200.00 right now....

Go for the XL-1 if thats what you got your heart set on.I'm lookin at the sony vx-2000 myself. Both great cameras.Canon used a XL-1 to make the commercial for the *chincy* Zr-10 which i play with now.Do'nt knock a small camera because there are times when you need some thing that does'nt attract a lot of attention when your out in public, and their so much easier to carry around.I'm using apples final cut pro for editing which works great.Only wish their was something as good for windows.Any suggestions?

Johnny,

Oh, I'm not knocking "chincy" perse. Just, for my needs, a little handheld isn't gonna yield the quality that a pro camera will. This isn't a camera for home videos and such. I'm thinking of getting one for production-quality "film-making" for my MFA thesis and other things before that. As for editing sofgtware in Windows, I wouldn't know. I use Media-100, which is Mac-only. I know the windows equivalent, but that's the professional stuff, with hardware MPEG encoders/decoders that cost thousands. Weird, though, that you do your own stuff. I figured MTV edited your show for you? ;)

Cool Dawg, just wanted to say that if you can get a XL-1 for 3200 delivered that sounds like a good deal.It retails for 4200 and a place i just checked wants 3600.I'd say jump on it,all the reviews i read on it were positive. One of the issues i'm concerned about is controlling the camera through the firewire.Still have more research to do ,let us know how beachin it works.

BTW,

I know I said I don't know of any consumer-level editing soft for the PC, but I guess I was overlooking premier. It's actually quite powerful if you know how to use it.

Hey, that Sony seems pretty decent fromt eh reviews... Not as cool-looking as the XL-1, but it's cheaper. Would it be more in contention with the XL-1, or the less-expensive, but still bad-ass GL-1?

I have'nt compared specs, but i believe the sony and the Xl-1 are pretty close to each other give or take. The Xl-1 uses a b/w viewfinder which is more professional, the GL-1 is not a bad deal either,i've seen it for 2grand and has great reviews too.Btw i played with premier a little bit and it just looks too consumerish.Like I said final cut pro does everything i want but i do'nt want to by a Mac when i can just bum the computers at school. If you watch closely, the guys taping Jacka** are using sonys;)

LOL on the PF4, it's like a peeping tom's dream isn't it, except from the way they describe it working it wouldn't be very effective on a real human body.
