i took off the hsf and took off the shim. scrapped off the yellow goo that was on the 9700 pro and put on a thin layer of artic silver. before i can o/c my card to 340/320. now if the core is at 340, i see artifacts (tears). sucky @ss. who woulda thought that the yellow goo was better than ac3.

Did you make sure ALL the "Yellow Goo" was off the bottom of the heatsinks etc?

You prob didnt, and thats probably your problem.

AS doesnt go well with other cooling "goo" ;) :p

Unlucky bud, if you dont want your 9700 im still quite happy to pinch it from ya ;) :p

Dan ;)

Did you "grind" down the shim, so that the cooler sit's evenly on top of the GPU. The copius amounts of the "goo" that ATI put on there was to help fill in the extra space that the default shim put between the GPU and the HSF unit. A little research shows that sanding the shim down to make sure there is good contact with the GPU is usually what people do, when they replace the standard "goo" with ASIII.

Have you seen this Thermal Compound review? By the looks of it Arctic Silver isn't much better than the regular Silicone Grease, so it isn't inconcievable for this "yellow goo" to be better than AS3.

Possible. But the Zalman GPU Cooler uses it's own goop combined with the heatsink has left many happy customers.

Yeah, I've heard nothing but good things about the Zalman coolers, both CPU and GPU. Maybe that would be a better way for iLoveDivx to go.

the heatsink is sitting directly on the core. i took the shim off.

Did you lap the heatsink?

With a rough finish like (all?) the R9x00 card's sinks have the goo/pad is better than paste. Take it back off, lap it, put it back on. Should be back to where you were unless you damaged something else in the process.

Sand the surface of the HSF to make sure that it's completely flat.

The pad is thicker than the layer of AS III you are using.

Do you guys not read? 10 words into his first post he explained he removed the shim. Obviously the pad thickness core/sink gap isn't at issue. And already explained it again since.

People don't like to think =\

The bottom of the heatsink is free of goo.

Technically that yellow goo is the best out there, phase change pads. Or atleast, I think so.

How did you remove the shim? It looks almost like it's soldered to the GPU or something.
