From the New York Times

Over 11 years, he restrained spending growth to turn a large budget deficit into a surplus, cut taxes, forced many on welfare to go to work, abandoned a sweeping approach to health-care reform in favor of more incremental measures, antagonized environmentalists, won the top rating from the National Rifle Association and consistently embraced business interests.

The NRA rating thing really shocked me. I wasn't expecting that, and the tax cuts thing was also unexpected.

How the hell is he popular with the left then if he is for everything that they are against?

not all democrats are "ultra left wing".

i'm considering sending him a modest contribution via his website.

if he is the candidate, then it will be close, very close.

I don't think that is quite an accurate statement. Read the article. He espouses many principles that would piss off a lot of conservatives. However, he appears to generally be a fiscal conservative and a moderate in terms of gun and enviornmental laws.

Hmm, thanks for the link. I'm going to read up more about him.
