I've got the weapons light, 2 battery model. M2 I think.
Love it. Surefire is the best light you can buy.
Is the G2 the low end plastic model? Its still a great light, but feels a little cheap.

I have a G2 Nitrolon, great little light.

Pick up the P61 lamp off of ebay for a scorching 120 lumens.

How hot does that sucker get? A "stock" G2 gets pretty toasty after a few minutes of use. I'm scared to know what doubling the output will do.

The g2 is the cheapest one they have. Something like $36.

It definitely meets the small, powerful, & cheap requirements but it's definitely not one to rely on for light. It's way too bright to do common tasks with, & eats batteries much too quickly to make a good general use light.

If you want the most light possible for short periods of time it's great, but if you need to walk around, work, read stuff, etc. you'll be feeding it batteries every hour (or 20 mins with the P61 lamp).

Hot. Supposedly it will bubble the stock lexan lens, I bought a borosilicate lens (aka pyrex) before ever installing the P61.

Even with the P61 lamp + the replacement lens I still have only $50 or so into it.

I would not recommend a G2 simply because theres better lights.
Yes, you get the same batteries, same performance, same bulbs and same output....But the higher end lights feel better.
A G2 you turn it on and go "Whoa".
A higher model Surefire you pick up and go "Whoa".

I would recommend going to brightflashlights. Hes a illumination dealer, and has pretty good prices.
He has a section on a forum here
Or you can email him at brightflashlights@gmail.com.

I went through him to get my G2, and was very happy with the service.

Brand new batteries will only last 1 hour if the flashlight is left on for that long?

Yes, a stock G2 will eat two CR123's in an hour. A G2 + P61 will do it in 20 min.

That is NOT what you need for camping. The Surefire G2 is what you need for impressing your buddies on the flashlight enthusiast forum. You need a Dorcy 3D 1 watt ($22 at Target). It will last 20+ hours on $3 set of D cells. Not only will you have light when you need it, but you'll have it the next time, the time after that, the time after that, the time after that, and so on. I've taken mine on several 3 hour night Geocaching trips.. That probably would have been 10 or 15 sets of those damn little CR123s, not to mention the hassle of carrying extras and swapping. If the weight is a problem, get some more protein in your diet.

I love my Streamlight Strion -- rechargable, so no CR123 batteries to buy at $3.50/pair (online - $6+ at a typical store)..very bright, but it's significantly more expensive than a G2.

Riiiight.

Lets do a simple math problem.
If Jack has a flashlight that lasts 1 hour on a set of batteries, and Jack is out for 3 hours, how many sets of batteries will Jack use?

*Hint*: It will be less then 10 sets of batteries.
And if your really worried about it, get an LED head for your Surefire.

Otherwise, having the best combat light in the world has nothing to do with impressing your buddies and everything to do with having LIGHT when you NEED it.

The G2 is nice. Surefire flashlights are great.
Though I've stopped using mine mostly because of low battery life.

If your firm on 75 bucks, get a G2 and an additional LED head for it.
It'll put you a hair over 75, but it will give you the most "bang for the buck" as it were.
Contact the guy I listed above and he'll do you right. You'll get 3 hour runtime from the LED head and the throw on an incan on the normal head.

EDIT
I will add, as said above Surefire lights are not to be bought for casual use lights. Its bright enough to be less the ideal for poking around your PC case, and its overkill to just walk outside to the car or whatever.

That said I will still stand by Surefire as THE light to get. I dont buy flashlights to impress my friends or walk to the car. I buy them to use them. I buy them for seeing what went bump in the night. I buy them to stick on my weapons and deal with what went bump in the night. I use them in a "work" sense, to change tires or see what I'm doing when I'm pulling a truck out of a snowdrift at 2 in the morning.
Surefire lights are not something you buy "just to have a flashlight". I use my Electrolumen XM-3 for casual around the house use.
But when I go, or I go serious, nothing but the Surefire.

You can also find batteries pretty reasonable at Battery Station. I wouldnt recommend buying them from Wal Mart, you'll get flat out robbed.

My 6P rocks :).

Everyone I meet is impressed with the quality of the beam and the brightness of it. I wanted the extra build quality over the G2 and paid some more £££. Worth it to me.

I use a Inova XO3 at work, boiler work, and it gets used hard everyday and it still works like a charm. Its been used to hold stuff up, taken 6 foot drops off of boilers, sunk in washcoat (refractory cement like paint) and still works the tops. Its only supposed to last 2 hours of constant use before lowering light output, which works out to be ~ a week or so so it dows eat batteries. Battery manufacture makes a difference also. The last batch I got are crap and go to like 1/2 power every once in a while when brand new. Put a diff set in and its fine.

I really, really don't get the whole flashlight hobby thing. I can understand most other hobbies, even if I don't find them interesting personally. But they're flashlights. I can see wanting a brighter one, but.... I really don't understand how excited people get over flashlights.

sure you do - you can see wanting a brighter one.. and some people can see wanting a brighter one too.. and quantify it mathematically. Then you have to ask is there a catch? Probally battery power? etc.

Just like tech, finding what's the newest brightest, or most efficient, or etcetc. It's better then stamps since at least i'm never in the dark ;)
