I do not really need help with this matter ivjust want people to know what happened because i have nothing better to do right now.

1. Friend suggested i update my bios

2. Went to sony.support.com to get bios update

3. Printed instrctions and got floppy disk ready.

4. Began following instructions and installation

5. 99% finished about to restart

6. .........restarting......vaio laptop shuts off.....

7. Press power button.....screen doe not turn on (not even flicker)

8. Power light is on, fan is on, Hardrive.....does not start...screen still off.

9. Shut off laptop, left it off for 10 mins, and unplugged

10. Attemtempted to turn on again, fan on, makes starting up noises, power light
on....compuiter doesnt go any further...doesnt hardware stops trying to boot up...

11. I loudly yell in my room...OH SH1T!...

12. Try to use extra sony power cord to see if the previous power cord is not working
properly (optimism)

13. Does not work

14. Open and cheack ram if its properly inserted or burned (nothing wrong with ram)

15. Attempted to reinstall windows (disk drive cannot read system restoration disk and screen remains black.

16. Opening and checking of internal case pending....... Even if bios messed up the software settings the computer should still be able to read the cd and the screen atleast flicker or something. So for some reason installing bios could have fr5ied my mobo since it was making loud processing noise before it suddenly shut off. Room was cold (33 degrees outside and my window was cracked and laptop still hot)

OMG I FOOKED UP! so now my ui gave it to my comp tech uncle to open it up to see if its the mobo that got fried or something. If it is he said he will either try to get me a new mobo all expenses paid(if repairable) and pay half price for a new computer if im planning to buy one another...which i am)

Oh laptop was kind of old but not really and wasnt the greatest thing around but i think it had 2 more years of good life or more. I am using this old 1999 gateway i have for now.

Laptop
Winhdows XP-Home Edition
AMD Athlon 32 bit 2100
PowerNow Technology (some power saving feature)
1667 mhz 768 mb RAM 200-pin
NVDIA Graphics Card
Sony Vaio

Desktop
Gateway
Windows ME
Pentium....dont remember number
557 mhz 64 mb ram 168-pin
OMG AN ANCIENT MONSTER! I use it to type up reports and check my temple email, assignments, etc.. for the time being.

BRING IT!

In case you do want some advice, I seriously doubt you fried the mobo, in fact i'm sure you didn't. What you need to do is a hotswap bios flash with another laptop the same as yours (or anything with the same chip). I also suggest you put linux (or something good and free) on the old PC - winME is pretty much the worst OS ever made and if you've connected it to the net it's gonna have more viruses then a thai hooker in no time.

Right. Most often you'll just need to hot flash or a new BIOS chip.

I hmm hotswap? bios flash? xD...Yeah winME is the worst but so far ive been kept protected using AntiSpyware Beta from microsoft. SOMEONE SAVE ME FROM THIS HORRO!!.

On a side note i am not that upset because i did not pay for the laptop anyway (Gift).
I'm just kind of sad that i just do not have a good working one right now. If my uncle can't fix it i will simply have to go dell desktop :/.

Its a shame dell does not sell them with athlons. They are intel all the way it seems.

I would make fun of you, but I did the same thing. It's actually more sad than it is funny. Here is what saved my computer.
CP saver
Remove power from the system. Pull cord from wall if you must. Or from rear of power supply.

Remove the battery.

Move the CMOS jumper to clear postition (pin 2 and 3).

Move the speaker jumper to on position. Page 7 quick start manual.

Make sure you have a wired keyboard plugged into the PS2 port. Not USB in other words. USB to PS2 OK.

Leave the CMOS jumper at clear for at least 30 minutes.

Put ONLY one ( 1 ) stick of memory in ORANGE slot closest the top edge of motherboard.

Replace the battery.

Set the CMOS jumper back to normal (pin 1 and 2).

Press and hold down the "Insert" Key on the keyboard.

Apply power to power supply again WITH "Insert" key still pressed down.

Press the start/power on button on the rig. WITH the "Insert" key still pressed down.

I know it is for DFI motherboards but someone on this forum said it has saved alot of his motherboards for other brands as well. I hope it helps.

Dont think that would work too well on a laptop.

Most you can really do is either send it in to get the bios reflashed... Or if a local shop has that kind of equipment.

If the BIOS is screwed resetting the CMOS will not really do anything but its worth a try.

Or... give us exact model number of the vaio unless i happen to be blind to see if we can find a "trick"
