i may rma my 9700...

i'm beginning to suspect my 9700np card is somehow defective. nothing i do will keep it from locking up. i've tried drivers from 3.6 cats to 3.9+hotfix. i've tried running with case open for cooler operation, even though my case temp is low. i've tried disabling the vpurecover, fast writes, setting the agp speed to damn near everything it'll let me.

i'm going to run the cpu and memory stress tests tonight to narrow my problems down to video hardware for sures, or shift my concentration to memory/cpu.

if i can't implicate the memory/cpu, which i doubt it is, because it did the same thing on my old system, i'm going to see about rmaing through ati.

it's about 4 months old, is that too old? if i do rma it, i'm under the impression that they stopped making the 9700np. if that's the case, what can i expect them to send as a replacement?

if so, what power supply do u have? it may not have enough juice.

it's been like this for since i got it, but i had just assumed it was due to an incompatibility with my old board, plus i didn't game as much until i got my new barton system.

as for power supply - it's an allied brand, rated at 400w, so i assume it feeds the card plenty of juice.

If you can, try a better quality power supply. Your allied brand may not have enough juice available of the correct type. Also try connecting the Radeon's power connector to a plug all by itself; don't use a splitter.

will do thanks for the recommendation. it is connected on a splitter with my hard drive and a slot cooler...

well i think that did it. i ran CoD @1024 with full AA and AF settings, max detail, and it didn't lock up. then i played silent storm for about 3 hours.

even though they stopped making the 9700 np, they prolly still have some left over sitting now in their warehouse "junkyard." They normally reserve those for replacing defective cards, and afterwards, any more left over are prolly OEMed to who knows where?
