I may have killed my onboard sound card

Hi, I need some advice.

I was playing flight simulator 2004 and noticed some static coming from my speakers. Through the static, sound was coming from both the right and left speakers as well as the subwoffer. Because I had just rearranged my computer onto a new desk and unplugged and replugged everything into the computer, I though that maybe the speaker wire was not connected properly into the onboard sound connection of the computer.

I think I did something dumb by going behind my computer and fiddleing with this connection (while the computer was on and playing an mp3). The result was that the left speaker stopped working. I fiddled some more and now the right, left, and subwoffer do not work. Everything looks good in the divice manager with no conflicts or problems. The speaker lights come on, but no sound from them. Also, no sound from the headphone jack on the speakers.

Could I have shorted out the onboard sound card by jiggleing the speaker wire. If so, am I correct in assuming that the only alternative left is to get another sound card. Any alternatives or further tests or suggestions are very welcome. Again this is an onboard sound card on the following system:

AMD 1.34
Epox motherboard w/VIA chipset
VIA AC'97 onboard sound
Windows 2000

Everything else seems to be working fine

I highly doubt you could possibly hurt your sound card by messing with the speaker cables. I'd guess that your speaker wire has a short in it, or the jack is not fully seated. First try reseating the speaker wire's connector(s) to see if they might be loose. If that doesn't work try plugging in a known working set of speakers or headphones directly in to the sound card and see if those will work.

I tried plugging in a set of good headphones directly into the onboard sound jack and turned up the volume and got absolutely nothing. Hence, the reason I suspect the sound card. Also, I double checked everything and nothing is muted.

NE thing is possible but after trying what Nohr suggested you might also look in the BIOS to make sure the onboard sound is enabled...short (no pun intended, well maybe 😉) of that luckily the onboard sound loss is no great loss and you can upgrade by getting 1 quality soundcard now !

It sounds like it's a hardware problem alright, and looking at your system specs I'm betting you have the 686B southbridge so I would recommend a non-creative labs card to be on the safe side. I have used a SBlive 5.1 with 686B before and didn't have the infamous issues the combo was known for but why gamble?
