Ever since the noodle thread, I wanted to try and make some. So I found this wonton noodle one at costco. I cracked 2 eggs into the bowl and nuked it.

After it was done, I touched the egg with my chopsticks and it exploded, no bukake'd me in the eye...wtf

I hope there are no egg born eye infections #wishiwaswearingglasses

Uhhh I really don't advise microwaving eggs, cracked or no. It's not a good idea.

Actually I had that happen to me too, nuked the eggs but they exploded as I was removing them from the microwave. Nothing quite like having boiling chicken fetus all over you (and most of the kitchen).

Always remember break the yolk before microwaving eggs.

Back in the day when microwaves first came out, my dad going against what they taught you in the microwave cooking school they forced you to go to, before they would sell you one, put a an uncracked egg in and turned it on.

45 seconds later the complete inside of the microwave was covered in baked on egg. I got tagged as the slave/kid to clean it. Took over an hour to get it completely out.

Your wife really walked in on you after he was able to at least jump out of the kitchen window, right?

I give the excuse a 8/10 for believability and such a strange random event to provide further proof.

Hope he wasn't too hurt in the landing.

I was stuck with only a micro to cook in for a bit, and would whip eggs with cheese and onions and microwave in a bowl. Came out great with no explosion.

I didn't know I was playing Russian roulette.

Wait - cracked the egg but kept the egg still in the shell?

Or cracked the egg over the bowl so that all of the egg spilled out into the bowl, thus no shell?

I read "cracked 2 eggs into the bowl" as the latter - most seem to be assuming the former.

When it happened to me I had just eggs (yolk intact), no shell or anything else.

Why an egg will explode when cooked in a microwave for a sufficiently long time?

Best Answer

Foods cook from the inside out in a microwave. Foods that are fried, boiled, or baked cook from the outside in. Boiling is a self limiting cooking method. The hottest the food will get when boiled is 212 F (at sea level, and if the water isn't salted). Frying, baking, or microwaving allows the food to get hotter. When you microwave an egg, the liquid inside will get very hot. If the shell hasn't been pierced to allow steam pressure to escape, the egg will explode.

If you're heating up a hard boiled egg, just run a toothpick through it before you heat it up. So long as I've done that, I didn't need to worry about pressure building up and it exploding.
