I've heard 420 have numerous reasons for being associated with marijuana, from it being the California police code to the fact that that 4:20 on a clock with a happy face makes it look like the person has a joint in the corner of his mouth.

The real scoop is that it was supposedly coined by a group calling themselves the Waldos (IIRC) in CA in the 70s, and they determined that when one of them said it was 4:20, regardless of actual time, they would meet by some statue and smoke marijuana. It spread, and is now generally referred to as "international pot smoking time."
I've also heard it comes from there being 420 active chemicals in THC, which I believe has also been debunked.
