I managed to fux0r my XP setup but good! Any suggestions now?

I have XP Pro and had it running very nicely...

until...

I installed and executed the nVidia refresh rate fix program. Ka-BOOM!

Now XP won't boot up. The splash screen comes up but then I get a BSOD with a message regarding a hive file that can't be accessed, is corrupted or missing and it refers to some /.../.../.../SECURITY file.

The probelem is I can't boot in Safe Mode. I can't boot in Last Working Configuration mode. It plain won't boot--I always get that BSOD.

Okay, I caused the problem and further compounded it by not knowing enough about XP to have set up RESTORE parameters yet.

I'm assuming I'm totally screwed and need to reinstall XP. So... do I need to reformat the C drive to install it, or can I just reinstall XP over the old existing version? I would like not to have to reinstall all my programs that reside on the C drive if I can avoid it, but I will if I have to (obviously).

Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't have an XP manual as I got a Not For Resale version of XP Pro. It appears that I know just enought to get myself into trouble.

Thanks again.

You should be able to reinstall over the original.. Boot from the CD and go through the steps as if you are going to install it. When it detects the previous install it will either give you the reload or a repair option(been a long time since I messed with it). What it should do is reload all of the original files..

Thank you for your suggestions.

So... tonight I'll go and make to reinstall XP and it will detect the previous XP version and thus will prompt me to write over or repair? Sorry, I'm kind of an XP newbie. Thanks.

That is the basic of it- One it detects that there is a previous installation it should ask you if you would like to repair the installation? You will be prompted to press 'r' (I think) Give me some time to get my Linux box straight and I will go through the motions to see exactly what it says...

I'm glad to know I'm not the only guy this has happened to. Fail-proof indeed! 🙁:|

Thank you, Panter505, that would be greatly appreciated.

The thing is, I think I booted from the XP cd and attempted the Repair option, but I couldn't for some reason. Please keep in mind that since I didn't know exactly what I was doing, I never set up any repair/recovery options beforehand. Ah... I remember, the repair option just kicks me to the C:/Windows prompt, I believe. Then what? I just want to repair the broken files. Argh!
