What chemicals shoulld I use in the bong to keep the algae and stuff from growing? I was planning on using some antifreeze, as I had read of someone else doing this. Anything better(cheaper?) to use, or would something like you would put in an aquarium work also?

I will post pics and stuff on my website when I get through with it....

With a bong cooler any chemical's you put in the water will be in the air you breath. I wouldn't recommend any unless you can find a natural non-toxic substance. You also should know that you will be going through distilled water like.......water.........:D. MrThompson use to run a really nice bong cooler, he might be able to give you some pointers.

Yeah..... my computer is right next to a window, ventilation is no problem, i would just like verification that antifreeze or aquarium treatment would work....

It seems that the aquarium stuff would be safe, as the water in my aquarium seems to evaporate more than my bong will ;)

I think MrThompson was going through more than a gallon a day in water. But the aquarium stuff might be safe. Good luck man. I always wanted to build one, but not into the maintenance on it. If you get a water filter and a float valve, you can set it up to autofill so it wouldn't be a hassle. I wouldn't use the Glycol based antifreeze (basically toxic) though. Not even sure you would need to run it (the anti-algae) more than like once a week or so. I also heard in a thread about watercooling that Zinc or some other metal like that works like the anti-algae stuff. They use it in boats or something. So if you do a little research, you might be able to find what kind of metal is used and just put a small block of metal in your cooler and not need to add anything.

Dude, you wouldn't believe the trouble I've gone through just to get the parts I need.

For example,

Schedule 40 Thick wall 4" PVC pipe is not the same thing as Thick wall 4" PVC..... the bastard at the store sold me the wrong stuff..... i finally got it worked out though...

I will look into the 'solid' stuff for killing algae... thanks for the idea.... if anyone knows about this for sure, pm me or something.....

that's not algae--algae would take weeks to grow, especially in a hostile environment as bongwater (yes, there really are toxic compounds in pot smoke). That substance that accumulates on surfaces exposed to the water is resin--very stickey and extremely difficult to remove. They will, without question, dramatically reduce the thermal efficency of the cooling system very quickly, even if you replace the water after every single bowl (like that would happen anyway).

You would be much better off keeping the bong and watercooler separate.

Good luck>

:D

Sorry, but thats funny.

fell8 - bong coolers (just a name) are essentially cooling towers like nuclear power generators use. Warm water from the waterblock is pumped to a showerhead or other misting head, where it is sprayed down a long tube to be collected in a reservoir at the bottom. The misting head allows the heat in the water to be released into the air and moreover allows for some level of evaporation (evaporative cooler like swamp coolers for houses) which can cool the water cooler than ambient temps.
