I made Best Buy "return abuser list" in 45 minutes, but their staff is still awesome.

Went to go buy a laptop today, as my Macbook Pro is just annoying with 1280x800 screen.

My local Best Buy had 4 Zenbook - 1080p models in stock for $999, so I said screw it, I'm going to buy one.

Sale went easily enough, no pressure to buy warranty, and was in and out in 5 minutes. Got home and ouch, panel had white spots, realllllly bad backlight bleed and 16 (yes, sixteen) stuck White pixels.

I exchanged it with no problem, and checked it in the parking lot. Sure enough, 2 stuck red pixels and 1 green. OK WTF?

Went back in, and the girl helping me was like oh no, you serious? I said yeah, but she exchanged it again. Sure enough, the register beeped and I was on their "abuser" list. I've never returned anything to Best Buy, but I made it.

They apologized profusely and even opened up the remaining 2 boxes, and sure enough, they both had dead/stuck pixels.

I don't know what the hell is up with that. I've got about 15 at work, and never noticed any pixel defects (I check every laptop for defects) with the Zenbooks. The girl at Best Buy told me she'll never be able to buy another laptop again without worrying about the display...lol

Ugh, not my day...but kudos to them for letting me check each one until they ran out of stock.

My UX31A-DB51 has some backlight bleed, but that's it.

Yea, I don't know what the hell. ASUS has a stuck pixel guarantee (and free 1 year accidental) with every Zenbook model, but not the models/sku from Best Buy and other retail shops.

I would have kept the first one and return it to ASUS, but it's too late now.

Maybe they route ones with potential issues to those retailers?

At my local Best Buy, I noticed that they only had the older model Zenbooks (has the dark gray background behind the keyboard). Maybe those ones aren't as good?

That is weird... for defects should not be on abuser list... people returning for cash/refund I would understand...

This was the newer model with Intel 4000/wi-di. :(
It would have been a steal, but I am too anal.

Going to Apple in a few minutes, I'll probably just get a 13" Air. I don't feel like playing panel lottery any more, and Apple doesn't bullspit you with returns.

The staff at the Yankee Stadium Best Buy is awesome still. I've never felt more helped with a naggy anal issue like that before.

Yea. It's funny because the register beeps like crazy if you are on the list. I guess I won't be shopping at Best Buy for 90 days. It sucks, lol.

Ahh, then it was the BB people who were douches.
Wait, are they?
Are they mac fans?

No, they were absolutely wonderful. What other store would open EVERY box of a laptop just to make 1 sale.

I'll almost guarantee that anyone else off the street wouldn't have even noticed the stuck pixels at all.

I wonder if they'll lose money from returning them to ASUS, or having to sell them as open box.

i guess its cheaper for them to hope you won't bother rather than to do a simple test at the factory lol

Yeah it sucks. I have had a really bad streak with bad pixels on my hardware.

One stuck green on my iPad 1 (returned easily)
Two stuck green/red pixels on a Vizio TV (sold for $200 loss)
Stuck green (it's always green for some reason) on my 1440x900 LG monitor (gave to brother for free)
Hair/cotton in my 50" 720 plasma (banged it on a bed for 20 minutes until it went out of view)
1 Dead pixel on an HP 1080p Laptop (lived with it due to HP bullcrapping me, sold at $400 loss 3 months later)
1 dead pixel on an Acer Laptop (gave to my neice for free.)
Stuck green pixel on my iPad 3 (returned easily)
Stuck green pixel on an Acer Iconia A100 (returned to Microcenter easily)

I hate it. I buy maybe 4-5 laptops a month at work, and have NEVER seen a stuck or dead pixel. I don't know why I have so much bad luck with it.

Yeah. My friends don't let me touch their gadgets because they are afraid I'll find something wrong with it.

I personally consider anything with a dead pixel worthless. You could show me a Retina Mac, with one single dead pixel, and I wouldn't give you more than $100-200 for it.

I would rather give it away for a huge loss. I'd even go so far as to break it if I couldn't get rid of it, or if it passed return window.

That is sure a strange policy, anti customer almost. Does this mean you cannot return anymore items if you continue to shop there?

Also, does anyone know if they do this in Canada. I don't shop at best buy but I buy lots of stuff from Future Shop and I think they got bought out by Best Buy.

Yep. I would be unable to return anything I buy in the next 90 days. Usually chronic returners would get flagged, but I got flagged for 2 high priced items in a short period. They actually NEED you to have a valid NYS ID or License to authorize returns. If you don't have one, or are under 18, you'd need the manager to override, or they can deny your return outright.

It's a stupid policy, and I can understand why they have it, but yeah, they've lost my business for the next few months. Holiday time coming too, so it's bad screwing me. :) I spend tons on gadgets this time of year.

I counted 14 stuck pixels in this thread.
Scared me at first, using 2880x1800 r-mbp with zero malfunctioning pixels and zero bleed. ;)

At least 1280x800 is better than 1366x768. :D

That makes me hugely jealous. I'd pay more if I could get a guarantee of no dead/stuck pixels. I'm heading to Apple in a few minutes. I have my eyes on the 1440x900 MBA.

I keep trying to figure out what role or position you fill on a ship. Your electrical interest and knowledge points to an engineering degree. But your insane level of knowledge and interest suggests a theoretical design engineer rather than a shipboard operator; such as a shipyard design engineer or contractor.

Maybe you are the electrical division officer in the engineering department. However, I cannot see the engineering department having need of that screen resolution size and the system specs you have mentioned in the past. Do you work in Navigation, maybe?

Are you willing to provide this information because I am curious? Thanks.
