I love Windows XP Remote Desktop Sharing!

I was using RDS today at work (on a Win2k machine) and it is great. I can play mp3s at home, and they come out of the speakers at work! That is so f#cking great.

I could almost play videos over desktop sharing! Wow. It is much better then netmeeting or VNC desktop sharing.

Anyone else try this or anything else cool in Windows XP?
 
Sounds cool, almost as good as a remote X terminal (just more expensive).

How secure is it though? That's what would worry me the most.

CS and fragging on dust would be great. I am doing this on a 10 Mbit connection using Coax. (insert groans here)

I think I might be able to play video with RDS over an ATM connection at 155 Mbits. I will try that out later and report back.

This also solves the problem of employers reading personal email. I figure I can use outlook from home perfectly now, and never worry about snoops.

You dont think this desktop sharing uses specific ports to operate? I think a decent firewall will fubar any cool applications.

It's looked like a cool feature to me, but it doesn't really have the wow effect anymore, i've been using PC anywhere for a while now.
 
hmm... this might be a good reason to upgrade to xp (no, not by paying 😉 ) if this will work through my school's firewall...
 
yeah it's pretty nifty....anyone run that &quot;tour XP&quot; video yet. Nicely done if i say so myself. I really like that soft lines and stuff MS is using. That movie file but be hella large though. Wonder where it's stored on the drive? hmm
 
Yea I'm real interested to see how this performs, just haven't got hold of an Xp disk yet, hehe.

Anyways, the best performing app that does this I have found is radmin.
 
You can run a RDS server on XP, not 2000 as far as I see. But you can connect to an XP machine with 2000 with RDS client installed.

I ahve used VNC, and it is a POS program. Sure it is crossplatform and all, and open source. That does not change how unstable it is for me. Netmeeting ran a lot better, but it was not great. RDS is near perfect. I have little or no experience with PCAnywhere, so I can't compare it. But this is nice for me.

I guess this can be blocked by a firewall easily, I fortunately work in a permissive environment where that will not happen.

Amen!!!, that's the first thing I thought when I saw they had that in XP...
 
I think this is different from terminal services in Win2k as in this is more for the home user who will want to access the desktop when he is away.

As for audio, if I play an mp3 on my home computer in winamp, well the sound comes out of the speakers at work, not home. Video is jerky even on a 155 Mbit LAN though.
 
Is the Windows XP RDS similar to PcAnywhere's Remote control feature? If it is I can then probably ditch pcAnywhere when I upgrade to XP.
 
Not too sure about this, but I believe the RDS in XP uses a modified T.120 stack that is used in NetMeeting.

But I digress...you can use NetMeeting RDS on all MS operating systems (95 and later, that is...)
