I have a 1988 Toyota Corolla FX that had the original AM/FM radio and front speakers. So I bought a cheap Kenwood CD receiver and got two speakers out of the basement for the back of the car. I was planning on having to run the speaker wire all the way to to the back for the new speakers.

But when I pulled the original radio out the wiring harness for rear speakers was hooked up. So I'm thinking what the hell is that hooked up for since there aren't any rear speakers. I popped the plastic stuff off around where the speakers would go in the back, and sure enough, there were two wires on each side.

I guess Toyota ran the rear speaker wires regardless if the car had two or four speakers. Gotta love Toyota. :D

You got lucky Sukhoi, when I had to run speaker wire to the rear of my dad's old GM car, I had to run wires all the way to the rear :(

Rear speakers were probably available as an option so it was easier for Toyota to install the wires for every car when they put it together rather than have to take apart the liner if someone wanted the option.

Most all car makers use the same wiring harness for all possible options makes it easier for them to upsell you.

Once upon a time, you used to be able to check off individual items on a list of a hundred options to include on your new car. Now, the best you can do is pick from a few packages. I think we can thank Toyota (and Honda) for that trend, too.

I've got a 99 toyota camry that literally had the living sh!t beat out of it before I bought it. I had to put a transmission in it, which only ran me $500. It's never had the plugs or wires changed or any evidence of careful maintenance. I was driving back and forth between Indiana and Iowa for a while, usually at about 79MPH with the air on or moonroof open, and I would consistently get 30 MPG. I definately love Toyota!! Looks pretty easy to work on (4cyl anyway), doesn't making noise everytime you hit a bump, runs like a top. Will definately buy another!!
