I bought myself a KT266 motherboard this summer--specifically an Epox 8KHA--because I couldn't afford anything else at the time, as well as a Duron to tide me over until the Palaminos were released in full force (I actually knew I wanted a 1.5 GHz CPU, so that was really what I was waiting for). That worked out nicely because my roommate was going to build a Duron system this fall, so I just picked up the model he was going to get, I used it in the meantime, he gets a good price on it. I got my Athlon XP 1800+ last week, but my 8KHA didn't like it and refused to work with a 133 MHz bus speed (yes, I tried many troubleshooting steps, the damn thing only posted 1 out of every 3 times at 133), so I picked up a Shuttle AK31 v3.1 KT266A and got everything working today. I was leary of that specific MB because I tried an AK31 v2.1 this summer and it didn't work out of the box, but I'm *really* impressed with the speed of this board and CPU. Of course, had I gotten my 8KHA working with the Athlon XP, I would say the same thing, but really, I'm very impressed with the quality of everything so far. Now if the Distributed.net client would properly recognize the Athlon XP core, I'd be all set....
Incidently, I got a 3dMark2001 score of 4580 with Windows 2000 SP2, GeForce2 Pro @ 250/450 w/ 21.83 drivers. That's about a 50% increase in my score from before with the same drivers and card, just a KT266 MB and a Duron 750 difference. I can't report any Sandra numbers yet, either, as I'm still getting all my stuff installed. I don't have a CPU monitoring program installed yet, so I can't report my temperature at full load with my SK-6 and 7000 RPM Delta black label fan. Anyone have any recommednations of a good free one? I've used Motherboard Monitor in the past, but I never get it to work right. Are there any other good ones just for fan and temp monitoring?
