"What do you do?"
"I'm in construction."

so what's the significance/underlying meaning of that?
I see that scene was mimicked in Ashanti's music video.

The idea is that Karen can't possibly believe Henry is actually in construction, but she accepts the lie to live the good life with Henry. Underlines the complicity of many Mafia wives.

BEST.... MOOVAY... EVAR :D

I could watch GoodFellas every day and not tire of it.
The scene mentioned in this thread is amazing, classic and often studied in film schools.
Another great scene is when he is driving around trying to lose the helicopter.

Man this thread is like filled with Film critics or something. What is a longshot?. I guess I gotta learn to appreciate movies more. I like Goodfellas, but what is so great about that scene? just the way they walked around the kitchen or something? ya I agree it probably took alot of attempts and everything, but I remember seeing other things like that in other movies, especially titanic. Can anyone explain what a longshot is?

Yeah, I caught that the other night.....hadn't seen it in a few years, it was good to watch again, even if edited for tv. Although it didn't seem like too much was missing.

I found it funny that Karen was the actress that plays Tony Sopranos therapist, and the guy who plays Chris in the Sopranos was the kid who got shot in the club by joe pescis' character.

the scene was shot in one long take. i think usually in movies the average length of a shot before its "cuts" is around 12-15 seconds, a lot of times even less. the fact that they went from the street all the way down to the club through all these corners and angles while maintaining a steady shot is impressive. q.t. uses quite a few longshots in his movies also, best example is in 'jackie brown' where ordell (sam jackson) and beaumont (chris tucker) are leaving his apartment and also when they go to see "the koreans".

love goodfellas btw, bad ass soundtrack also. the crystals (song in the op's vid, phil spector and his wall of sound) and especially using derek and the domino's layla at the end.

"for a second i thought i was dead, but when i heard all the noise i knew they were cops. only cops talk that way. if they had been wiseguys, i wouldn't have heard a thing. i would've been dead."

i believe there's a U2 Music Video that was filmed entirely in one shot. Bono was on a horse carriage or something like that.

scorsese = master.

I love the scene where Henry's getting followed by the helicopter, w/background music of Jagger's "Memo From Turner" from Performance.

Aaron Sorkin uses the walk and talk camera shot a lot in his shows... one of my favorites, and one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a TV show, was at the end of the West Wing second season finale "Two Cathedrals" with Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits playing in the background. That episode is my favorite single episode of any television show I've ever seen. Of course you have to watch the whole first two seasons of the West Wing for it to have the impact that it does, and while you're at it you might as well watch seasons 3 and 4 too.

Did anyone else think that when Tommy (Pesci) got shot in the head, there was too much blood coming out? I mean that thing was covering the whole fvcking floor and kept coming out like fvcking Niagara Falls.

Watch the video of the Senator who shoots himself in the head at a press conference. It was coming out like a hose for over a minute. I had to shut it off it was so disturbing and it would not spot spouting. Nasty.

As I read yosuke's post that was my FIRST thought. :p

He wasn't a senator though, he was a state representative and state senator and he was the state treasurer when he killed himself. His name was R. Budd Dwyer, and the song Hey Man, Nice Shot by Filter was about his suicide.

One of the best longshots in film.

In the opinion of my Film class professor, it was THE best longshot in cinema history.

I would agree.

I think the one at the end of Much Ado About Nothing with Denzel Washington blows that one away in terms of complexity and scale. I think it was that movie.

i'm sorry jimmy

what the fscks the matter with you?

The best scene is when robert deneiro slams the phone in the phone booth because "spolier*. By far the best scene. Who cares about camera work, it's a movie, they better know how to operate cameras, I want to see acting.

I don't think you realize how much the camera work impacts your enjoyment of a film. Ever watch a video of a play filmed from a fixed point? Kind of meh.
