I got this one today...

Customer: I believe the floppy disk with the drivers on it that came with my USR modem may be bad. Can you send me another disk?

Me: You can download the drivers from http://www.usr.com/support/s-modem/s-modem-oem-downloads.asp.

Customer: DUH! If my modem doesn't work, how can I go online and download drivers for it?

Me: How are you sending me this email?

I've yet to get a response back. 😉

Good call. 😉 He's text messaging me from his cell phone. 😀

That'd be pretty sad actually. He has the means to text message to anyone from anywhere, but has no means to get online and send an email except for this one modem that he doesn't have drivers for? Hehehe....

Confused

We're definitely dealing with Uber Nerd Elites here. 😉

Priorities: Text message capability for cell phone over broadband (thus eliminating the need for a modem?)

A lot of laptops don't come with floppy drives. Go into General Hardware and many will tell you they don't put floppies in their desktops as well. There's also the public library, which many don't allow floppy or CD disks...

Now it would be pretty darn cool if he could download the drivers onto his phone and bluetooth (or 802.11b or whatever) them over to his pc... Can they do that yet? I know the danger.com "Hiptop" thingie with T-Mobile is pretty advanced, but..

What operating system is he using? I would imagine most modems, especially by a well known company like USR, are already supported under WinXP.

Either way, that's pretty damn funny.

I've got the ultimate tech support request from a user, the email read: "If you get time today could you please come to my desk and move my mouse to the left side of my keyboard."

yeah, he might be on a public access computer w/o a FD :/

MY school has zip drives that we are allowed to use. The library uses CDrs on some of the machines. Im sure he can find a machine where he can access a Floppy or something.

My response would have been: "Give it your best shot, and if you can't manage it alone, let me know. I'll come up and show you and your boss how to do it so in case the same situation comes up again, you won't be stuck waiting for me."

Well... I've had my fun, but it's time to move on. I just heard back from the customer.

He thought if he downloaded the drivers from USR's site that it would have to be done from that computer because it worked like Windows Update. This guy's apparently been installing a lot of software from the internet and not installing a lot of hardware.

But anyways.... I think we found out that the floppy disk wasn't bad after all. Apparently he was having Windows search the floppy for the newest drivers. He never got a directory of the floppy because if he had he would've seen that there was no .INF for the modem on the floppy, but rather a self extracting zip file that needed to be decompressed prior to installation.

Oh well.
