So I get a notice last night that there are updates for windows, I download and install them and low and behold my computer will no longer access the Internet after I install them. :(

Plus several other weird things are happening. (Norton anti virus will not enable among other things) I try everything to fix this problem to no avail. I even try restoring windows (No luck there...)

FInally I restore with a Ghost back up and go to bed. This morning everything is rosy again! :)

Norton Ghost is great! :)

Was one of the updates SP2? Or did you already have that installed?

SP2 was already installed.

I think the culprit was some "FIX" for network security.

Also on a bright note. I had split my Raid 0 array into two separate "drives", I was running out of room on my windows drive and I was going to have to eventually fdisk the drives and make just one large drive. Ghost went ahead and did this anyway when I restored. :)

maybe it was the WordPad exploit fix.

it is quite amusing to me that WordPad can be used to hack windows

So you're never going to install those windows update? Eventually you're going to have to, so why not just figure out what the problem is. Maybe it enabled the XP firewall, and you had IE blocked? Maybe it corrupted your TCP/IP... if so, just recreating the connection will recreate the TCP/IP.

I still have an XP image from well over 1.5 years ago stored away. You know what ? Applying that would still save me time over doing a full re-install of XP. Imaging rules.

<3 Ghost

Ghost seriously owns. It's definately on my top-ten list of must-have software packages. I make a Ghost DVD or two for each of my computers, then backup files to CD at least weekly. If the comp gets hosed, you just restore the Ghost image and drop your CD backup data files on the desktop. Works wonders! I can't wait for cheap printable dual-layer DVDs to come out...it'll be nice to put an entire install on one disc :)

As for security...I use Firefox for my browser, then Adaware and Spybot once in awhile for kicks, ZoneAlarm for the firewall, and http://housecall.antivirus.com for the A/V. No problems to date!
