The central library in Jamaica, Queens(nyc) has an amazing cd collection; thousands upon thousands. Always updating with newer releases too. They also have some older cassettes & a bit of vinyl. Best of all, it's absolutely free. 😀 The dvd selection is really pitiful though.

the columbus metropolotin library owns. it gets most of the newest cds and dvds. the request lists are very long though... but it usually gets most of the stuff that I look for.

libraries are so great I don't understand how they're still around. everything's FREEEEEEEE!!!! just bring it back when you're done. I was even able to vote early last week at the local library using touchscreen.

The UCLA Music Library has almost 17000 CDs and around 16000 LPs. I've copied about 300 so far (a major fringe benefit of working there).

update (yes i'm lame)

i have not been in a librarie in like 8 years, i went in my college lib 3 times and 2 of them was because i had to go because of a tour or some junk

Porcupine Tree, eh? From what I hear, that album is a masterpiece. I say that because the first PT song I ever heard, Wedding Nails, was so awesome that I immediately downloaded a lot of their stuff, only to find out that everything else they do isn't my cup of tea. I do think they're growing on me though.

I've never heard any of their stuff. Half of the requests are just because I jumped album to album through amazon.com recommendations and asked friends what they could suggest.

they're very progressive, and a bit freaky. The song I mentioned, Wedding Nails, opens with a sick guitar riff, very catchy and energetic, and then segueways into a slow, crawling Black Sabbath-esque musical sludge. They have loads of atmosphere in their songs, and most are either depressing or disturbing. Still, they are very good musicans, lots of odd time signatures and the like. A lot of people who like Dream Theater are into PT.

i remember this one dude at the library with his Powerbook. he would bring a basketful of CDs to his desk and rip them all, and refill his basket.

the guy could afford a Powerbook, but really didn't want to buy the CDs i guess.

Dream Theater
That's probably how I found the album on amazon.com. A friend of mine let me listen to some Dream Theater in his car and I liked it a lot, but neither COLAPL or LBPL have any Dream Theater CDs. 🙁
