I love jobs that don't have to treat their employees like children

I have been sick for the first time in a long time. Been taking random days.

There is no drama with getting a doctor's note, having to call in during the day, etc.

You have the time and don't have anything pressing at work, you dont even need to call.

Something pressing that can't be rescheduled, talk to the customer first and see what they'd like...then let your manager know.

My wife's job is so different. You have to go to the doctor or ER and get a note.

Personally I knew I wasn't dying and I'd rather let the cold work it self through my immune system which is also probably why I only get a cold/flu once every 2-3 years...this time I was seating in a family of 5 all coughing and their kids had snot all over them/sneezing. 5 hours in the air of that. :(

just a rant/soapbox.

going to the doc for a cold or stomach flu is a waste of everybody's time. i really dont know why some employers require that shit.

Likely because they differentiate between Vacation & Sick Time and don't want people using the latter as the former.

My employer just gives me X hours of PTO, I can spend them however I wish. Its awesome.

Yeah my employer separates sick and vacation time, however we don't need a note or anything, so there's nothing stopping me from becoming "sick" at the end of my vacations. My manager knows what's up and doesn't mind it at all.

YUP...that is how it works here. I am a unionized IT worker (ugh) so our rules are even worse. I actually plan on using my sick day for a vacation day this year though...mwhahaha :sneaky:

My last supervisor didn't want to hear why you weren't coming in; he didn't care. I'd just call in, and say I wasn't coming in; no hassles. On paper, we had segregated sick and vacation time, but in practice they were lumped together, and dealt with on the time sheet.

I make it a point to never say why I am taking a day off or coming in late, so that the expectation isn't there that they should know. I also figure it helps if in the future I'm taking days off to interview elsewhere, I don't have to lie.

That's the best thing about commissioned sales, though, is that if you are making money then nobody cares what you do.

I worked for a company like that once and my doctor buddies would always write me a note for when I was sick

If I'm sick, I have to call in to some number by a certain time so that they can get a substitute teacher to cover my classes for me. I don't know what that time is, I don't know what that number is. Therefore, I'm here.

Actually I recently had the flu and going to the doctor can help. Since I went within the first 48-hours of symptoms I was able to get Tami-Flu which help reduces the effects of the flu.

At my work PTO time is lumped together. However getting a doctors note can help. You can only have so much what is called un-scheduled PTO. The PTO when you call in the morning and say you are not coming in today. If you get a DR note it doesn't count against the total amount of un-scheduled PTO time you are alloweed.

I'd tell them to go pound sand and that I don't want to deal with a bill from a bullshit ER visit ruining my credit for life.

I don't get paid if I don't come to work so unless I'm in a hospital bed dying, I'm coming in.

we dont get paid out for sick time and there is no max cap on banked sick time, so i'm technically now up to 800+ some hours of sick leave. though we're subject to an attendance review if you meet some criteria for number of absences or hours or something like that over a rolling 6 month period. though it is good to know that i'm at the point where short term disability is covered.

Unless I'm supposed to be at a client's site I'm usually at home anyways. If I'm sick and don't have anything to do I don't need to do anything.

Only need a doctors note if I miss 3 days in a row and that is just to say that I am okay to work again. Other than that, no problems.

HR has told us we're not ALLOWED to ask why someone is using PTO (due to HIPAA) so I cut them off if they try to tell me. I treat my people like adults and in return they don't abuse the process. Sick and PTO is all lumped (which is how it should be) so people have no incentive to fake being sick.
