I love how everyone is a Middle East "Expert" these days.

I just love it. At the office, school, forums, etc. There are always people who pretend to be Middle East experts. They have probably never met a Middle Eastern person in their life, never knew where Afghanistan, Iraq or Kuwait were, and get most of their news from reading the headlines on CNN and Fox.

Just remember, if you're an American, you're qualified to speak as an expert on every other country's internal workings and their relationship with other countries.

And if you're not an American, then you'll be damned if you speak a negative word about us!

The CIA nearly arrested me when I got out of the shower yesterday. Last time I wear a towel on my head!

What, do you think you're an expert on the psychological behavior of people who believe that they're experts on issues involving the Middle East?

:D

ehh, I don't think it's generally a bad thing. Most americans couldn't find east timore on a map if you offered them a hundred bucks. Knowing something about the middle east, even if it's a silly party line, is better than nothing. Isolationism is the enemy.

How do you teach an American geography..? Start a WAR!!

Seriously though..I agree, everyone in my workplace thinks they know it all now, and they know we are doing the right thing. I don't even try to talk sense into them anymore.

You're quite right. The masses are ignorant fools. I'm sure most had never heard of the Taliban until 9/11. Many still think that the US went into Iraq in revenge for 9/11. I knew that was a ludicrous reason then, and to the Bush admin's defense I do agree that they never said that Iraq was behind 9/11. They did let the American populous think that though, which they were more than happy to do. A modern day witch hunt.

I'm glad for the invasion of Iraq and, 9/11 aside, Saddamn needed to be ousted, but a lot of the people who supported the invasion were not supporting it for the right reason.

The humor in that joke is tainted by the truth behind it ;) I will not soon forget that less american highschool students know where their own country is than Canadians do [know about where the US is]. That's a good 15% of people you can write off from ever having any real contribution in society other than giving me poor service at Mcdonalds. :D

Well idealy what would make one an expert?

Some people have no other choice but to absorb what the news tells them, what CNN tells them, word of mouth from people who come from the country. Not everyone has the pleasure of visiting the country, nor does anyone want to risk taking the chance when the only know of the place and what they hear.

I think it would help if people who actually come from these countries talked about it more often. Share their firsh hand knowledge of their home land with people others.

Hang out with middle easterners and they'll be quite inclined to answer any questions you may have :)

I'd say an expert would be somebody who gathers a large amount of volume about a topic from different and varied sources.

Yeah, I agree. I always ask questions. At one tine or another I probably bug the crap outta Sully with questions because of curiosity.

A co-worker here at work (the Asst. Controller) he's from a country outside Afghanistan, we talk about the news all the time. Sometimes he says the stuff we see on TV isn't nearly as gruesome as it really is sometimes. He talks about some of the more beautiful things there as well, unfortunately there are more ugly than bad. Hopefully with time that will change.
