I love hot-swappable parts.

I had one of my redundant power supplies die on one of my servers yesterday.

It's so nice to be able to just yank the old one out and plug a new one in without shutting anything down.

Redundant power supplies + overnight parts replacement + hot swap = 0 down time!

:cookie:'s all around!

OK, smart ass comments aside now.

What parts are hot-swappable and how do you determine that?

Depends on the Make/Model and Options of your particular server.
It's pretty much a RTFM.

Our servers have hot plug hard drives and power supplies, and I believe certain PCI slots can also be hot plugged. (Never had a need to swap a PCI card out in any of them though)

Yep. Muse, some server motherboards allow hot-swap PCI stuff but it's kinda rare unless you're using quad-CPU servers, of which a fair amount of them can do this. I think I saw an Intel server once that supported swappable memory, but I don't think that's even possible. It might have been redundant RAM I guess.

Regardless, hot-swap PSUs and HDs is great.

Sun servers are the best about this, pretty much EVERYTHING is hot swappable. Turn off a CPU and pull it out, put a new one in and turn it on. Fun stuff.
