I don't know where you folks are or what you are eating but according to this article in today's Food section of the San Francisco Chronicle it's basically impossible to find a decent French goat cheese in the USA today due to apparently unreasonably (possibly vindictive) restrictive import rules. In a nutshell, they are requiring exporters of these cheeses to use pasteurized milk, which completely ruins the product. The article is quite detailed and informative.

Does anyone know of a really good goat cheese that's still available around here (and where)? Trader Joes? The Berkeley Cheese Board? The Berkeley Bowl? Whole Foods? France? 🙂
 
mmm...goat cheese:

Shrimp and Goat Cheese Quesadillas (makes 2 LARGE quesadillas):

1 1/2 lbs shrimp, headed and peeled
1 lime
2 cloves garlic, minced
cracked black pepper
2 portabello mushrooms
1 large red pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
6-8oz goat cheese
2 tbsp sundried tomato paste
4 whole wheat tortillas (burrito size--10-12")
olive oil

Mix shrimp with chopped garlic, pepper, and juice of 1/2 lime. Quickly move to hot pan with a little olive oil in it. Add onioins.
Saute shrimp & onions until done, adding juice of other half of lime while cooking.
Set shrimp aside.
Cut pepper into small strips. Cut mushrooms into large strips. If you have a grill pan/griddle, roast them, otherwise you can cook them in a little olive oil in a frying pan until soft, but not mushy.
Lightly coat one side of each tortilla with olive oil.
Spread 1/2 tbsp of sundried tomato paste on other side of each tortilla.
Add shrimp, onions, peppers, and mushrooms to 2 tortillas on the tomato side.
Crumble goat cheese on top of each.
Top each with other 2 tortillas, olive oil side up.
Transfer assembled quesadillas to large frying pan/griddle on medium-low heat, toasting each side until golden brown and goat cheese is melty. You can either do them one at a time, or have 2 frying pans going at once.

Slice into quarters and serve.

 
I thought I had eaten it when I ate Feta Cheeese but now I find out that almost all Feta Cheese sold in the US is made with Pasturized Cow's Milk (well the Feta I've eaten)

Vallpreso (sp?) Feta is goat, I believe. I LOVE that feta, sooooooooooo good with pita or lavash. One pound blocks are like $4.30 at the costco here.

There's no reference to Vallpreso or anything close in that article. Chances are 100 to 1 that this Costco goat feta is made from pasteurized milk and simply can't hold a candle to what's available in Europe (NOT in the USA, according to that article). Don't that get your goat?!
 
Gjetost is Norwegian. It's a caramelized goat cheese you put on things like toast, muffins, etc. It's pretty good. You can get a couple of different kinds Ekte is from all goat's milk IIRC, and Ski Queen is a Goat and Cow's Milk mix. Both should come from Tine Norway.

BTW, NEVER buy from cheesesupply.com aka cheesepeople.com -- VERY bad service, and don't ever expect a refund...


Edit - We found it locally in New Orleans at Dorignac's (local chain), and in Virginia at Farm Fresh
 
Yeah, goat cheese is good stuff. I had some in Ireland A long time ago that was literally the best cheese I've ever tasted.

goat cheese reminds me of what goat ass taste like..not that Ive tasted goats ass.

i had alot of goats milk as a kid and hated it.

I checked out the label when I got home, and it is actually sheep's milk, and it is imported from France.

For some reason I always though it was goat. 😕
 
I bought some goat cheese yesterday, at $12.99/lb. A very small piece. The guy putting out the cheeses didn't know that much about the goat cheeses (Berkekely Bowl), so he went to ask the manager if they had any made from unpasteurized goat milk. He came back and pointed out this cheese and one other, and I got this jack. I'm not terribly impressed, frankly. It's white, very smooth, has flavor but not knock your socks off flavor. I don't know if the manager was telling the truth, of course.
