I love FS/FT forums for building budget PCs

So, I've been building computers for people as a little side job to fund my own upgrading hobby. And at first I'd buy all-new parts, and for a cheap ($400ish) system, you're pretty hamstrung in the parts you can use, especially since I buy legit OEM copies of Windows 7.

However, thanks to FS/FT forums, I've been able to build decidedly awesome PCs, stick to a ridiculously small budget, *and* turn a profit! I can't believe I've not been using these forums to buy stuff all these years as a computer enthusiast. I don't trust eBay because I've had bad luck buying stuff from there, but on forums, people seem to be legit and won't sell you crap.

How about you guys? Your thoughts?

I guess if your customers don't mind a build made out of used stuff, then go for it.

I wish I could find customers to build computers for around here.

Given how cheap a name brand desktop costs new it shocks me that there is still a market for "clones" at all.

If I build a rig for someone, I usually tell them new prices then let them know I can try to get better deals from forums for used stuff and they are usually ok with it.

I've bought enough stuff over the past 2 months to build 6 PCs for sale, and I also upgraded 3 of my own. I was doing great on the parts that you don't want to fail such as mainboards, but lately had a string of bad hard drives. I bought 3 in the past month, with two failing with bad sectors. Of all the things that I couldn't have fail, the drives were what I didn't have spares of. Now I gotta start selling these darn things. :(
