I love free hardware!

I was taking the garbage out on my way to work today when I noticed that someone had tossed a Compaq tower into the dumpster. I didn't have time then, but I made sure to grab it when I got home at midnight. Whoever pitched it took the cd drives, hard drive, and ram, but left everything else.

The motherboard appears to be dead, but I managed to salvage a working Athlon 1.2 Ghz with heatsink/fan, a 250 W power supply with the quietest fan I've ever heard (already swapped with the jet engine that was previously in my power supply...though now that I can hear the whine from the hard drive, it's driving me nuts), and a floppy. Not a bad haul for something that was in the trash 😀

There is still a monitor out there that I'm going to snag before I go to bed. It's been raining all day though, so even if it did work when it was pitched, I seriously doubt it does now.

edit: Forgot about the network card and modem, though I haven't tested either of those.

Nice haul!

If it worked before it should work just fine if you let it dry out.

Don't even waste your time with the monitor, it's a firehazard now if it's got water in it. It could literally explode when you turn it on.

As long as he lets it dry out COMPLETELY, it'll be fine. But if there's a speck of moisture...yeah. Fubar.

I've heard of people putting their keyboards in the dishwasher. I'd do it myself, but these Gateway Anykey keyboards are hard to come by.

/me hugs my Anykey

Not "literally", most definitely 😛

I was planning on letting it sit for a week or so before I even mess with it...am I still running a risk then?

Maybe I should test it out on the balcony 😉
