I lost the ability to use static addresses behind my router?

Hi guys,

I bought a Lynksys wireless router last month. I get SBC DSL (PPPoE), and wanted to share my connection between my win2000-desktop (using standard cable) and my XPhome-laptop (802.11b). I configured both PC's to use static IP's behind my router. My router (gateway) was set to linksys default 192.168.1.1 and my PC's were 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. I don't think this mattered, but I set both to the same workgroup and enabled file and printer sharing.

Well, for about 3 weeks everything was working beautifully in the above configuration. I had an unreal2k3 server set up on my desktop using port forwarding, which was working well for a couple weeks. Last week, I walked up to my machine and had absolutely no internet connectivety. Same thing on the laptop. Every once and a while, I could load my homepage (yahoo), but I couldn't go any further (I am unsure whether it was cached or not, but I don't think so as I saw recent headlines). I tried everything... turning off both machines, turning off the router, turning off the DSL modem, left them off overnight--and nothing. I then used XP's native PPPoE and was able to connect to the internet using the modem directly connected to laptop--so I knew I did have the internet and it had to be my router. As a last resort (I don't even know why I tried), I plugged my whole network back together and set each machine to dynamic routing. BINGO! Everything has been working like a champ since.

Can anyone come up with an explaination as to why static routing behind my router would all of a sudden stop working? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
