Where is it stored on my computer? I can't get into Windows, so I can't access the registry, but I can access my hard disk from Linux. If it isn't stored on my computer, does anyone want to sell me a Windows XP home certificate of authenticity (which has the serial code on it). Thanks!

I need it because I need to reinstall Windows because I messed up my Windows install.

it isn't on the cd? All of mine have it there, and they're legal too. However they are also the academic versions. If it isn't a home-built, check the sides of the case. My lappy has it stuck on the bottom and i know dells have it on the side.

the OEM cd's dont' have it on the cd. they are on a little sticker that you are supposed to stick on the computer box. :(

sorry dude, no one is gonna "lend" you theirs cause they probably already registered it.

I got it OEM from the people (company) who built my computer. It was in plastic wrap (like it was new), and I might have lost the COA when I opened it. Or maybe they didn't give me one? It's nowhere on the computer case.

If you have an old DOS boot disk and some DOS tools (old Norton, etc.) you can find lots of info as ASCII text information without booting to Windows.

And how is it gonna help? The certificate alone won't make it work. I think you'd better buy a new Windows box. The XP Home for under 100 bucks isn't at all that much money...

The COA (that has the serial on it) will help him install it since he needs the serial after he formats and reinstalls with the disk that he already has.

Not that hard to understand, people... You sell him your serial and trash your copy of XP Home. He's not asking for anything illegal. Good grief...

Call the people who built your computer, maybe they can help you.

Could they have not given me one? I have no way of proving it though.

I emailed then and they said:

Philip,

Sorry we don't keep copies. If you can't find it, you need to buy a new one.
I am not sure if there are any way to retrieve from the registry.

I either lost or never received the Windows XP Certificate of Authenticity
which should have come with my computer. I need to reinstall Windows
because
I accidentally did something to it. The Certificae of Authenticity has the
serial number which I need to install Windows. Is there any way of getting
annother one? Do you have a copy of the original one by any chance? Please
let me know. Thanks a lot!
