i lost my phone the other day and some asshole has been making calls. i don't have to pay though, i reported the incident within 2 days. so how should i try and contact this jerk off? find out the calls he made? i had very little battery left and i really doubt he has the exact charger for it...

Why bother, you're off the hook? If you have a contract you should get a record of all the calls made in your next bill.

I read a story the other day that cops called a guy on a stolen cell phone and said he won a bunch of free beer. When he went to retreive it he was arrested.

Call his friends... I am sure you will be able to get the phone number of the people he called. Lie and screw with them.

He kept it instead of turning it in. He used it for his own purposes. How is that not theft? It's not a federal case or anything... but it's not honest either.

Sounds like entrapment, but I'm probably wrong.

Do you actually want the police pursuing cell phone minute thieves?!

Get a girl you know to call him and pretend not to realize it's not you. Have her set up a meeting for a quickie. Then go there yourself and beat the piss out of him.

Note: if you're a small guy and he's not, you may participate in said quickie yourself. You've been warned.

i'm not sure if entrapment applies to people who have stolen things.

Not entrapment since the offering of free beer wasn't enticing the thief to do anything illegal. The thief was arrested for stealing the phone, not for attempting to claim a prize.

Yes, you are wrong. It would be entrapment if the police convinced him to steal the phone, not if they trick him into showing up for a meeting.

Entrapment is when law enforcement coerces/entices a person into breaking the law so that they can catch him. It is NOT when law enforcement uses trickery to catch someone who committed the crime of his or her own free will, without enticement.

Your misconception is sadly common though.
