I lost my first friend today :(

After 17 years, the dog I grew up with as a little kid was put to sleep today. I know it was for the best, she had alzheimers, couldn't control her bladder, developed sores on the pads of her feet, and could barely eat. But it hurts. She was the one constant that made me happy in a childhood full of dissapointment and pain.

Can't say I've ever known a cooler dog. Her breed was basenji, an egyptian breed that is naturally unable to bark...But when they are happy, they do this little yodel. I took this video of her yodeling several years. You can watch it here and see photos of her here.

Was your Basenji mean? We had a male Basenji that tolerated us, but hated everyone else. He got kicked out of obedience school.

Hah. That made me smile. She had a mate (I added a picture of the two of them to the original pic link) that was nasty, even to the family most of the time. Bit a cop once. But boots had a temper that the breeders said was very unusual for basenji's. Sweet, gentle, never mean.

Best dog a kid could ask for.
