Ok, I put together a computer tonight, and when I went into Windows, there was no cd rom drive to be found. So I did a reformat and fresh install of Win-98, and when I was done, it still wasn't there. I have tried playing in Bios, and even flashed it, but I cannot get it to show up in Windows. It shows when the computer starts up fine.

900 mhz tbird
ECS k7s5a mobo
Geforce vid card
256 megs ram/pc 100
Phillips dvd/cdrom drive
maxtor 40 gig hd
300 watt Enermax psu

If anyone has any clue what happened, that would be so great. The cd-rom works in other computers, just not this one.

hmm...i actually had the same problem with my sisters computer.

my solution was to just install win2K.

i'am assuming you tried the "detect hardware" function.
have you tried maually installing it?

Yep, I think I am going to have to install XP myself, because I cannot find any reason for this happening. I tried the auto detect, that did nothing, and I don't really know how to manually install it, I hate to say.

havent used Win98 in a while.

but for maually installing a device, when you "detect hardware", i believe there is an option to either let windows search for you OR you can pick a device from a list.

any win98 gurus in here?

i realize you have probably already tried this but...

did you check the cables and make sure they are connected properly and pin 1 oriented correctly, also check jumper settings on the CD-rom.

Does the cd-rom light blink when you power up and does it have power when you are in windows? Generally when troublshooting people tend to overlook the obvious until someone points it out. I know i do.

if the BIOS detects the CD-ROM, would it be safe to assume that the cables and stuff are connected properly?

just wondering because i had the same problem with my sisters computer. <-----the one that i built for her

I say there is a good possibility your CD-ROM is bad, I have had this problem before.

Call the manufacturer and tell them what the symptoms are, they usually ask you to remove the data cable and start up your PC to diagnose if it's a bad drive.

ya your right, i guess i didnt read the post good enough. If the bios detects it, it should be installed right.

when you go to add new hardware there should be an option to specify the hardware you want to install (or something to that effect) dont tell windows to find it, cause we already know it wont. just tell it what you want it to install and then point it to your driver disk. i have had this problem also and sometimes this approach works
