P3 700mhz
30gig Maxtor HD
256mb RAM
Asus mobo (not sure which model)

I had to do an impromptu re-install this past weekend after my system started freezing horribly. After the re-install, I noticed that ALL of my music/picture files were missing except for 1 or 2 different mpeg files....but my disc space is still reading the same as before the re-install. All of the program files are there, but most of them wont boot due to missing .dll files. What gives? I was stupid enough to NOT have a backup...so am I totally screwed or what?

NTFS, to answer your 2nd question (I always forget to post the obvious specs!)

Have you done a scandisk on the drive?

Maybe they somehow had the hidden attiribute set on the files? Try setting Explorer to let you see hidden files.

you might want to read "If you use NTFS Encryption, read this" on the Operation System forum.
Once you re-install Win XP it will think you are the different owner and you are able to see the files but it will not let you access it - "Access Denied"...
