But then won $76 back to finish up for the day.

$40 up overall since I started. I made the mistak of playing at a higher blind no-limit table today. And higher limit = larger swings.

Try to hold on to your money. There is no reason to give it away to people you don't even know.

I started about 4 or 5 days ago with $50 deposited. I'm up to $93 now. Ignoring a few bad runs overcome by good runs, I've been playing decently.

I just made the mistake today of going to a higher table and then caught a few bad breaks.

What kind of breaks?

Pocket [Qs Qc]

Flop [Qh Ad Qd]

Turn [4h]

River [As]

I bet it up..

Soandso wins the pot with pocket Aces...

Yeah, ouch :)

I'm a noob at online poker so it just takes some getting used to. My goal is $5 profit a day. And I don't play a ton, just kill time on my laptop while watching TV with the wife.

did he get the other A? the chances of that are arstronomical, that is the super jackpot hand at most casinos, where a 4 of a kind gets beat by another for of a kind.

so your 4 of a kind lost to a full house.

interesting

remind me not to play wherever you play, as you don't seem to be playing any kind of poker that I know of

btw: where do you play? I just registered at pokerstars, but I'm waiting for my funds to transfer from neteller.

I'm giving it a shot because my poker face sucks in real life.

As the saying goes, if you can't spot the sucker blah blah, then you are it.

Well in real poker games I'm usually the sucker :)

At least in online poker everything is determined by luck/knowing how to bet!

Like I care if you call shenanigans on that. That was my big loss of the day, but a few other bad rivers came up as well. Anyone who's played much at all will realize there can be some insane luck.

The more common ones are when there are two pair on the table and you have the lower of the two. You cant fold that down most of the time. Or when there is something like 5 3 5 on the table and you have the 5 for three of a kind, but they pull out the pocket 3's. Or yet another, you have 3 of a kind, and they pull out the flush on the river.

These are just examples and they've all happened to me. If I had better strategy these kind of hands probably wouldnt happen as often.

If I didn't want to make money from it, i would be playing with fake money for fun :).

Thanks for the goodluck wishes though :)

PS The reason why I say up $5 a day is because everytime I play I fluctuate a bit. Up down up down. The key is to stop while you are up, and not while you are down :p

Geez, people it's only $50! It's not like he's addicted, he plays a little at a time for fun.

Now, I hope you signed on with a casino that matched your deposit, at least.

that 4 aces beats 4 queens, there was nothing you could do. Guy would have stayed in with ace full no matter what you did. ace on river to make his 4 aces is just REALLY bad luck. thats just a terrible beat.

and to these people who say that you can't make money, you don't know what you are talking about.

It might be true for online casinos with blackjack, roulette.

But if you are playing holdem, somebody is getting the money. You aren't playing the house. Granted, the house takes a cut off the rake, but somebody makes money and there is skill involved.

I say dxkj is doing pretty well for just starting. hopefully he is still sticking to .50/1.00 and or 1.00/2.00 tables. Generally lower caliber players there. no-limit is a different ballgame.

btw, what site do you play at?

Pokerstars.com

I signed in after they finished their promotion so I didnt get a money match.

I play 1 cent / 2 cent no limit sometimes. I also play 2 cent 4 cent fixed.

Recently I've been playing .10/.25 no limit and been doing good there.

I went up to the .50/$1 table and thats where I got hosed by a big in with those cards. When you have four face cards the money signs kinda drown out any thoughts of losing :)

I will probably stick to the 1 cent 2 cent no limit tables for a while and grind out $5 a day until I build up my bankroll. On those tables the money isnt big so people are a bit loose. Everyone sees the flop unless you bet it up.

Why don't I like "Limit" tables? It's harder to buy the pot. It's also harder to tell what people have based on their betting (which is a big part of online poker IMO)

Anyway, my whole goal here was to play with semi-serious people online instead of bozo's who go all in everytime they join a table with play money. (though there are a few of those still :) This is fun for me for the most part, and as I get better I don't see why I can't keep taking money from some of these suckers.
