my sister IM'ed me earlier saying her laptop got infected, and symptoms i've never heard of before (red blinking warning, etc)

then a few hours later lo and behold i see a stupid page in my FIREFOX window emulating a Windows XP screen on my Windows 2008 (I use w2k8 server on my workstation) saying that my hdd is infected. and there it is, same thing my sister described.

I sure hoped she didn't click or download it. (I was away when she IM'd me.)

not a link to the said page but a description of it:
http://www.spywarevoid.com/rem...-browser-hijacker.html

I tried to open site in IE8, at least its banned by Microsoft. But i'm sure there are enough innocent people using XP/IE6 thinking they're infected. this is why when I set up the desktops for family i always change from the default XP Blue theme, but like I said, the non tech-savvy crowd just aren't aware or cautious enough to prepare for these things on the web.

shouldn't there be legal ways to take these assclowns down? what's ballmer doing these days? or mr. gates (or is he too busy being a nice guy)

And that's why Spybot is so populair under people who are buggered by family and friends about computer problems. And why it is so annoying that IE8 suddenly can't handle large lists anymore (modified hosts and block lists). Hope that that's solved soon, at least before Windows Update pushes it to friends and family.

Malware/Spyware is just going to get worse and worse. As long as these scumbags know they can make money doing so they will never stop. It's way too often we get systems at work that are so infected that it would cost so much to remove the spyware that the customer just opts for a reinstall. Some systems are so bad they won't even run anything long enough to get cleaned up. Even taking the drive out and scanning the drive doesn't always work either as spybot doesn't support this.

Malwarebytes > spybot.

Also isn't it odd that we have so much persistence of MPAA/RIAA going after downloaders spending millions in resources yet a malware writing ring exists costing business on a global scale many billions more than the entire recording (both music and motion picture) combined in said losses!

No one is getting paid off to make laws or to go after these people. The RIAA/MPAA owns Washington.

Spybot's worth having for the passive protection, but I agree that the scanner isn't the best thing around.

Most malware/spyware isn't made in the US. It's made in Russia. Making spyware/malware illegal in the States isn't going to do anything unless the Russians are on board with an international law and make a dedicated effort to going after monetarily motivated hackers.

First time hearing of that program. Is it better than Spyware Doctor? I'm using the free Google Pack version of Spyware Doctor right now.

FWIW it's one of the first things they run on machines at the help desk at my uni.

Turn off System Restore
CCleaner
MalwareBytes
etc

Is there a fix for Spybot and IE8 yet? Do any other programs cause the same problem (SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware, etc...)?

I am pretty sure that malware is illegal in more or less every country in the World, including Russia.

Ruby speaks the truth. I found out about this little gem last year and does a great job removing crap. Last year I had a rash of family and friends get infected with Antivirus 200X or Antispyware XP 200X. Between using Roguefix and Malwarebytes I was able to get rid of it on the first try.

Superantispyware is a good free one too.

That doesn't mean they put out much effort to stop it.
