california = paradise does not compute: see government and budget.

That is one of the big factors keeping me from moving to San Diego.

Even with the fucked up government and high taxes it's worth it.

I dunno, man. I live in Virginia, and even in the part of VA that has "high" taxes, it doesn't hold a candle to what I'd have to part with in CA. I'll put it to you this way: On a per-acre basis, the area I'm in is probably on par with some of the nicer areas of San Diego County. However, I pay about 0.85% on my property taxes. HOAs aren't prevalent, either.

No local income tax, and the state rate is 5.75% for anything over 17k. Wages are pretty much on par, although our job market here is faring a ton better.

From a financial perspective, we'd have to cut way back on our standard of living. But it definitely is paradise. That's why we visit my fiancee's folks as much as possible, especially since they got the new place up near Carlsbad a few blocks from the beach :)

You're probably right, though, now that I think about it, it's still probably worth it.

I rode through Carlsbad yesterday on my motorcycle. Where do they live? I know that area well. I used to work at GIA up on the hill overlooking the flower fields (which are in bloom right now and incredible).

California was a nice place... until it got sucked under the earth.
What, too soon?

EDIT: Oh wait, it is too soon. Doesn't happen for another 2 years

California. No weather. Lots of crazy people. Lots of traffic.

I rode my bicycle most of the way around the country, leaving from Michigan in the middle of September.

Twice, when I was camping, I awoke to find frost. This occurred once in Florida and once in California. Go figure...

"There is no such thing as bad weather..."

My Mom is from Michigan and I've spent no small amount of time there. But let's not turn this into a bash Michigan thread. ;)

To answer your question though I've seen icicles hanging off the bushes of a neighbor's lawn from his sprinklers in the early morning hours. Of course that's only happened once in the 19 years I've lived here. It does get down in the mid 30s at night during the winter.

No lets...it freakin snowed here today!!!!

Tis true! We got 5" of snow over here in Ann Arbor. Snow for my birthday YAY!

Absolutely beautiful.

I love it here. :thumbsup::cool:

But you have no weather.
Now Chicago, that's weather.

Chicago has no spring or fall, just summer and winter.
Southern California has no fall or winter, just spring and summer

You wouldn't think so, but I'd put days like today here in Louisiana up against anywhere else. Mid 60s, the air is crisp and everything is so green it hurts your eyes. Crazy how I was sad the winter was over a week ago and today everything looks so great that I'm constantly resisting the urge to stop my car and take a childish run through the nearest plot of grass. I can't imagine what it must look like in the prettier parts of Cali though.

Actually, we do have 4 seasons. You just have to live here for a few years before you really start to notice them. When you throw in the Santa Ana winds you could easily have many days during any of those seasons that feel just like summer.

As a California native I'm really tired of everyone making fun of us for having no seasons. I can assure everyone we have 4 proper seasons.

To make it clear : our 4 seasons are
- cool summer days where women wear spring dresses
- summer days where women try not to wear much at all
- cool summer days where women try out the fall fashions
- cooler summer days where women wear winter clothes

It is supposed to be crappy again Wednesday and Friday. They're calling for a chance of rain but of course that means the entire county will be on STORM WATCH 2009 but we'll be lucky if it sprinkles for 10 minutes. In reality it will probably just be in the low 60s, overcast, and breezy.

no different than California. Both have two seasons.

Why choose the shitty seasons over the good seasons?

and yeah, I just moved from Chicago.

I love Florida...lived here my whole life, no reason to leave(unless for the Virgin Islands or something like that :)

Too humid in the summer? Too many retired people? Always causes problems in elections? No hills? Hurricanes?

the Floridians?

My dad lives in Jax, actually. Interesting place in all of its redneck ridiculousness.

San Diego is the best place to be in Cali, imo.

I'll take living smack dab in the middle of a vineyard over living within a stone's throw of the ocean (and traffic and smog and tons of people) any day! :p NorCal also has seasons.

In fact it did hit 90F today, sunny with light winds, very pleasant, spent the day outside.

I would not mind to be in cali today. I'm getting sick of all these blizzards. We had a teaser of spring when snow melted to the point that we could see pavement, but it's like it never happened.

When your dreams include someday seeing pavement, your life might suck.
