Seagate's Sata II drive.

I always go for Seagate - reliability/warranty for one but it's not out for a while

I'll be getting a SATA II-enabled board, so do I:

1. hang on for the Seagate SATA II?
2. get a different make that's available now?
3. get a Seagate SATA I on the grounds that it won't make much difference?

Is there a guide that shows merits of SATA I v SATA II?

System will be video editing, games, multi-tasking so probably dual core.

Initially the performance difference between SATA-II and I will be very, very little. Later on that might change.

IMHO Seagate makes the finest drives out there. Whether it is SCSI, IDE, or SATA. Never had a lick of trouble with 'em.

If you really can't wait, go for the 7200.8's. They're fine drives at incredible prices.

7200.9 will have 16megs of cache, thats what im waiting for.

You'll be lucky to see a 7200.9 this side of 2006. Definitely not worth waiting that long for. If your goal is speed, Seagate should be your last choice.

If you enjoy the waiting game then I'd say wait but you're probably a PC person which means you'll build another PC in a couple years at which time those drives will be widely available.

If you enjoy video editing, games, multi-tasking then I'd say get whats out there now so you can spend more time doing what you enjoy.

It all comes down to time. Hopefully your enjoying the time whatever you're doing.

If you don't have a problem waiting for about a year, I guess you could get it.

If you're actually looking to purchase a drive in the near future, go 7200.8 already. If you want the 16 MB of cache, I know Maxtor and/or WD already have one (I think it's Maxtor).

Put it another way - what advantage is there in having a SATA II drive now? The bandwidth possibilities seem to be theoretical rather than being borne out in the real world. And I've just read Anandtech's review of 3 SATA II drives which is a bit of a mixed bag.
