Anyone else have a supermarket that does this? Here in the northeast we have Stop & Shop, they just introduced this neat feature where they give you a scanner when you walk in the door. You scan your food (or labels for produce) and then bag the food as you shop. You get to the checkout and hook your scanner up to the register & pay. Plus they have extra savings deals for people that use the scanners.

It's really one of those things that seems so simple I wish I had thought it up.

Cookie 4 me?

Bloom has them and nobody uses them. Sounds like a neat thing, but just believe me, nobody does it.

The casher checking your bag.

Something tells me that the teenage kids working the register won't exactly be too vigilant in checking.

I don't steal, so none of this even pertains to me. All I was saying is that I don't think teenagers getting paid minimum wage will always have the motivation or concern to check and make sure people aren't stealing.

Can't they use the weight of the bags like they do in the self-serve checkout at grocery stores and Home Depot?

They do random checks

So you bag your groceries, they unbag it, check it, then bag it again and try to convince people that it's fast and convenient?

I hate pie except for Shepards Pie and i'll never in my life shop at any place where i have to do the work while paying for it.

I'd be happy to use it if it gave me a fucking rebate for doing the work the staff at such markets used to do but oh no, they UP the prices and call it a service.

And people BUY THAT BULLSHIT... Christ, people really are retarded.

I'm pretty sure it would still be a lot quicker to just scan and bag them than to go through the list and check there are no extra items.

Don't know how it works at other stores, but at Food 4 Less out here if you put an item in the bag you didn't scan it somehow detects what you did and beeps a few times and loudly says "please remove the item from your bag and place on scanner" like 3 times. They typically have a lady sitting by the self scanning watching people. Of course this is a Food 4 Less pretty much in the ghetto so YMMV.

They probably weigh the bags when you pay like they do with the regular self checkout lanes.

I had a theory they could do this with RFID chips. Just bag is as you shop, push your cart through the checkout, the RFID scanner immediately adds up your total, you pay, and are on your way. Not sure how much it would cost them to rfid tag everything though.

My local grocery store has these little pies that cost a buck.
They have pumpkin.
And pecan.
And sweet potato.
And lemon.
And apple.

Damn. They're closed!

Not sure how you can rfid tag the items that you put into a bag yourself. Loose candy, nuts, produce etc.
