I like my Miata, but need something that can handle winter

FWD is out of the question. I'm only considering AWD/4WD if I don't keep a RWD car.

Edit: Is the MS6 AWD? I think it might be. I haven't kept up on it.

Just get a cheap set of rims and some decent winter tires. The Evo/STi aren't any better in the snow without the proper rubber. The compound on their stock tires are as good as slicks in the snow.

Ideally I would like a stripped-down bare-bones enthusaist car like my Miata. Except with AWD and a bit more power. Unfortunately, no company makes anything that fits what I want. I have to compromise somewhere.

A forced induction Miata would be my first choice, but it'd be terrible in the winter. An AWD car though would likely be four doors and heavy. Sigh.

Yeah, you pretty much need two sets of wheels and tires around here. Unless you try to use crappy all-seasons year round.

Heh I think a lot of peoples' ideal car would be a lightweight well-balanced AWD/RWD-biased car with plenty of power. Unfortunately AWD and lightweight never go hand in hand, since they tend to add a couple hundred pounds by themselves. 🙁

I'm not a fan of all seasons either. IMO they have no place on a sports car. You make enough compromises just by driving such a vehicle, you shouldn't compromise on arguably one of the most important aspects of it - the tires. Should maximize traction for the conditions.

What are your payments like on it?

It's already paid off. 🙂

Did you just save up for a few years and then buy it?

I did about half as a down payment, and the other half was done in a year and a half.

Wow three halves in that sentence. 😕

Without proper tires, the STi/EVO will fly off the road in the winter time just like any other car. Plan for two sets of tires you are going that route.

Also, AWD does not save your arse if you don't know how to drive 😉

The STi is pimp. i was looking to get one but need to save more for the dp. i like the half and half idea in a year and a half...

yes it is.

I'd say a subaru WRX or 2.5RS

the STi and EVO really aren't that great for snow (especially with the summer tires that come on them stock) -- so you'd have to buy the car, then new tires.
