originally it was 2048x1536 but I resized it for bandwidth reasons.

3 second exposure (2.83 secs. to be exact according to the EXIF data) at 2.8 aperture. 200 ISO, 9.7mm focal length.

I have a laser pointer that has a blue LED light on it. Shooting various objects with it I noticed that a pair of onyx bookend my sister sent up from Texas diffuse light in a really cool way, so I decided to have some photographic fun.

Yesterday I set up my camera on a tripod for a long exposure in a dark room. I shot the bookends with the blue LED from various angles to get even light, then before the shutter closed I hit each one a couple times with the red laser. I thought it made a cool photo. I call it "Dos Amigos". They're supposed to be a couple of Mexican guys sitting by a cactus.

Yeah it's not supposed to spread like that, I tried to clean the lens and the spread got worse so i'll have to either take it apart or find something small to stick in there to clean it right.

Will black things begin to smoke if you leave it pointed at it for too long?

I've aimed it at black things for a few seconds at a time and they only got slightly warm. No burning or smoking. Maybe if I left it on there longer? I don't want to overheat the crystal though, it's already "overclocked" to the point where it might get damaged if left on too long.

Yeah it's pretty bright. I can aim mine up into the night sky and see it go all the way up as far as you can see. Can be used for pointing out stars. My cam is a bit on the sucky side when it comes to night shots though. I can increase the exposure time all the way up to 15 seconds but it just doesn't look right, it looks kinda fake.

this is a 15 sec exposure of the laser at night into the sky

It looks a lot better in person.

I use it just for experimenting around with and star pointing.

You sure? The light has to reach our retinae to be detectable.

You sure? The light has to reach our retinae to be detectable.

Yeah the air refracts the light a bit (depending on humidity, dust, etc.) and our eyes are most sensitive near the green portion of the spectrum.

Do you think that if you hit some low clouds with something like a 20mW 532nm green laser that it would illuminate them a bit? I've never played with one before. I'm trying to imagine what kind of long-exposure fun could be had with that

That is really cool!!! I set it as background on one of my boxes. I dig it.

Wow, which scope make/model do you have? I'm considering one myself but I'm afraid I don't know much about astronomy. I know I'll have to drop some bucks and think Meade are decent?
