I like Gnome 2.0 too much

Well I prefer KDE, yet for what little I've used it I liked Gnome 3.0 more than 2.x.

I'm sure Gnome 2 will be usable for years to come.

I hear ya. AFAIC, Gnome2 was the perfect DE. Tons of functionality, and it could be made pretty without kicking your machine's ass. Give Xfce a try. It's like a gimped Gnome2, but light years better than Gnome3. Simple, and easy on resources, but it can be made to look pretty good, but with a bit more effort than it took with Gnome.

It's easy enough to try. Give it a shot :^)

I'll check that out. With Gnome, I have a very old school look that I quite and enjoy. I just hate all this plasticy user inferfaces that all GUIs are getting now.

I 2nd this. Both Gnome3 and Ubus Unity are just to awkward.

Many talk about keeping Gnome2 around at least in repos, but how long that will last until they come up with a reason to remove it or it breaks compatibility with other installed libs is another question.

Sadly, I am personally converting my Win7 desktop into a kind of hybrid with CYGWIN to get full BASH functionality that I am used to on windows.

I'm eyeing LXDE for my Gnome 2 replacement. I just like it better than XFCE..
Dittos. LXDE rawks!

Lubuntu 11.10 Live CD running on a 4GB USB stick with persistence.

Essentially, a PC-in-your-pocket.

Check out the CPU & RAM usage... LoL! 😀

Linus wants them to fork gnome and continue gnome2 developement.

Did you make that using unetbootin? How do you set it to be persistent?

I've always used dd (without persistence) in the past, from CLI.

Example:

Code:
$ sudo dd if=oneiric-desktop-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb oflag=direct bs=1M

But, lately, I started using the Ubuntu Live USB creator (usb-creator) GUI.

Couldn't be easier... 😉

Here's a screenie:

  • Download the .iso (I use zsync)
  • Plugin a USB memory stick
  • Launch the disk creator app
  • Specify the .iso file and the thumbdrive you want to use
  • Choose the amount of storage for persistence

That's it!

That's a sweet wallpaper!

Anyway, My first DE was Gnome2, then tried KDE4 and disliked it, then switched to XFCE4 and loved it, then switched to Openbox and loved it even more!

I've been playing around with Xmonad a bit too. Tiling WM's are definitely interesting.

You can probably keep using it indefinitely, just like KDE3 is available. Gnome 2 has been forked, but it's not clear whether the group that did it has the resources to develop it, or actually will. A lot of these projects die off pretty quick. Of course, it could be forked by someone else. Gnome doesn't get enough development as it is. XFCE is shaping up to take it's place, I think.
