The guy never refilled the drinks, took 5 minutes before we were greeted at the table, and didn't ask about desert, just dropped the check off. Also, we had the card in the check minder for about 15 minutes.

It's times like these I'm glad waiters make $3 /hour. I'm normally all for standardized hourly wages.

whoops, thought this was the myspace blog, my bad

Tipping is a reward for doing a good job. If the service was as bad as you say, then I would leave next to nothing as a tip too.

I won't say, because I'm sure it doesn't reflect on the restaurant as a whole. It was fine dining. The meal cost $175 for two people.

I normally always leave a little something but certainly less than 15-20% if the service sucks. But often, certain things are beyond the control of the waiter/waitress. If the food takes forever to come out, that's generally the kitchen's fault but often, the waiter/waitress takes the blame. However, one thing I have zero tolerance for is letting my drink go dry without a refill. There's really no excuse for not making sure all drinks are topped off. That bugs me more than anything else.

My standard tip is 20%. Partly because it makes the math easy and party because I was a waiter once and it SUCKS.

If you do a good job, you get 20%. If you fsck up bad, you get 15%. If you royally piss us off, you won't get a dime. I basically have 3 levels of tipping. I go out to dinner to relax, so if you make me want to break out the long division skills because you don't deserve 15%, then I'm just going to zero it out to make it easy on myself. Fortunately, it's only happened 2 or three times.

One time at Scramblers I emptied my pockets of my pennies I was so pissed off. It was so bad we had to WALK to find a MANAGER so we could PAY. He ran my credit card and gave it back. I signed the slip and zero'd the tip line. I then handed him a fistful of change from my pocket and told him he could split it with our bitch waitress.

I was PISSED.

It's not hard to check for refills every now and then and take the customers' money when they're trying to give it to you.

I've never had a really bad waiter, so I normally tip 20%.
Wednesday we went out to dinner for my grandfather's 91st birthday, my hamburger was disgusting, but everyone else enjoyed the meal so I still left 20%

25% tip!

that's a LOT!

I leave 15% for average-good service. 20% for good service.

10% or lower for bad service

Just my two cents

Try expanding your vocabulary. It has nothing to do with blacks.

Our service at Chili's last night was abysmal. Food took 2 hours from seat time to plate on the table. Drinks were refilled two times in those two hours. Suffice to say, no tip was left.

EDIT: Forgot to add that some plates were cooked wrong, some sides were wrong as well. One person had to wait another 20 minutes for their food.

As I mentioned, some things are beyond the control of your waiter. If your burger was terrible, that is solely on the kitchen and the tip shouldn't be lowered. Glad you still left 20%. Refills, delayed service on requests for extras (napkins, condiments, etc.), failure to provide check/change/receipt, rudeness, etc. are on the hands of the servers. Poor food quality, delayed food, etc. is on the kitchen/management.

One thing I hate is when you have a small tab ($9), you hand the waitress a $20 and she/he asks if you need change. Uhhm, yea!
