...and I miss all the excitement. Apparently, all the alarms went off and the building was evacuated (Louisiana Dept of Transporation headquarters). Someone mentioned something about a gas leak. I haven't heard anything else b/c I just walked in the door.

I always miss the fun stuff...

I'm such a critical employee that I can leave work to go across the city to Best Buy to return a busted up Malcolm in the Middle Season One DVD set. I get back and no one noticed I was gone. :( I could probably leave for the rest of the day and no one would notice.

And your pay matches the amount of work you do. ;) Step into consultancy and make real money.

For now, my pay to work ratio is great. I am in a rotation program where the EIT goes to all the sections of DOTD. I sit and play on the computer and sometimes look at plans.

I have friends that work 60 hours a week and work on weekends/holidays. They kill themselves for consultants. I'm going to stay with the department long enough to take the Professional Engineering exam and to get my Master's degree from LSU. (DOTD pays for tuition)...

You will still be working there in 30 years. Once you climatize to the government won't want to work in private sector. Sure, right now the consultants your age get paid near what you do but just wait the gap widens out immensely in about 4 years. One of the problems you are facing is that you aren't getting real design experience, the connections and people you know will get your a good job in consulting if you do good networking but they will be hiring you for those connection not your design skills. If you don't make lots of friends and do a ton of networking while working for the DOT then you will be SOL in the consulting world. PM me if you wanna talk about it more.
