I laugh at all the people saying don't get 256meg videocards.

This is America, if you want it, and your expenses allow you to afford it comfortably, then buy it. Who cares?
One guy wants to buy it and 3 other scream: "But its a waste of money!"
They need to realize its not their money to spend anyways.

i was not referring to people that want the absolute best

if they want the best than they should get these cards

i was referring to those who say that the 256 Mb versions are necessary and a good buy or "I laugh at all the people saying don't get 256 Meg videocards."

I will get a 256 Meg card in a year or so and it will run circles around the 9800 Pro 256 MB 😀 or those that are saying that the 256 MB versions are much more futureproof

IMO they are 1 month more futureproof at best ALA Ti200 128 MB radeon 8500 128 MB

I guess you guys noticed already, but it doesn't cost $500 for a 1280x1024@85hz monitor. Mine does exactly that for $170, and any monitor above $250 will do that. Oh ya, and 256mb is not worth the money at all, and that is why I bought a 128mb 9800pro.

Well, Ben Skywalker has some valid points for the extreme gamers that have to have the best and obviously 256MB is not for everyone. What's all this talk about not having enough power to run 256MBs on the card? Let's see some proof!

If only older games were designed to load as many levels into memory as would fit. There would be near-zero load time in some 🙂

It's currently useful for other reasons such as freeing nearly-all system memory if that is still lacking 🙂

I like to run my screen in 9,200x6,900x32-bit resolution mode so I need a 256 MB for my day to day "work".

9,200x6,900 pwns joo! You should see how clear and crisp porn is on this screen! I can see parts of the human anatomy I didn't even know existed :Q 😉

Someone show me game benchmarks or proof that 256MB Graphics Cards will be worthwhile. Until then I laugh at you 😛

Doom3 will probably do that.. for you.. just wait..

HL2 probably, too. If you look at minimum framerates, you'll probably see quite a difference between 128 and 256.

And I've yet to see anyone point to a reliable source of that quote.

Someone at IBM once said something similar, but with a slightly different wording and meaning though, I guess that might be one source of that "quote".

I think it was something like...WHy not add more memory to the system rather than keep it at 640k (or whatever number). And they said it was not worthwile and they don't forsee anyone using more than that.

YOU haven't bought new cards because you can't afford one?

Your thread is condescending, pointless and without merit.

so you'll be spending over $600 for a new system then 🙂 new mobo/CPu/video/case/PSu if you plan to go with the new standard

"or proof that 256MB Graphics Cards will be worthwhile"

It all depends on what you can afford, are willing to pay or want in your system. Serious gamers with the money to blow will get this and love it! Some maps in UT2003 will run better and I'm sure UT2004, Doom3, HL2 and other future games will run better. If you upgrade your video card every year or less, then this may not be the path for you right now. If you hardly ever upgrade, then wait a few more months for the prices to go down and get one. That's pretty much it. You can continue to laugh, but these cards do have their purpose for some people.
