I never heard of lapping until I come across a thread last month. I finally got around to it this week lapping my vantec aeroflow with 360>600>1500 grit. My overclocked 2600 went from 44C to 39C under moderate load. I reccomend this mod anyone who has a few hours to spare.

Is this a poplular mod. I'm suprised that didn't come across it before.

Hmm, I wouldn't expect that big of a difference, the copper slug on the Aeroflow is pretty smooth and shiny as it is. Did you happen to blow the dust out of the heatsink between when you lapped it? I've noticed big differences after dust removal on my Aeroflow.

I know that when I clean out my Aerowflow on my 2500+ my temps drop about 3-4 degrees to about 31C at idle.

Hey, cool! I don't know much about your HS, but I do know a fair amount about lapping a HS.

The first time I lapped a HS was only about three years ago. It was a GlobalWin FOP-32, which was the schiznitz back in it's day. I noticed a dramatic temp drop. :)

I then proceeded to lap every POS stock HS I had...and it helped in every case.

That was then: HS's used to have grooves so deep in the bottom that your fingernail would catch and BREAK when you did the "ridge test."

These days, any good aftermarket HS comes with a nicely lapped bottom surface. Maybe not mirror-smooth, but nothing a good TIM like Arctic Silver can't fix.

Glad to hear it was a postive mod for you. :)

The aeroflow had a few minor scratches on it. I quite using it because the temps on my old 2200 got into the high 40's. The processor would become very unstable 50-52C. I never really cared for it. I could never get the bus higher than 160 the best overclock I ever got was a 1920 compared to stock 1800.

I been using a coolermaster aero 7+ for the last three months I really like the fan control, but when I lapped that one I didn't see a difference. I started with 360 but had to change to 100 grit. I used a permant marker to mark the base and there was a very prominent area around the CPU that wasn't getting touched. As if the base was warped and wasn't visible too the naked eye.. I had to sand a good part of the surround area off to get a flat finish. I am going to relap it though. I ran out of sandpaper.

Ah yes, I remember those days. DDR was just hitting it big. Athlon@ 1.33G was the top dawg and GlobalWin FOP-32's were screaming all over the US of A. Good times... ;)

This is the guide I used. You don't need to be too strict on the sandpaper grit what ever you can find till you get a fine finish. I pickup some wet/dry s.paper at my the local ace. They sell it in sheets for 60 cents each. For the aeroflow I probably could have gotten away with 600 and 1500, but not the coolermaster. The wet/dry sandpaper was a must and I kept rinsing it thuroughly I didn't enjoy using regular 100 grit dry sandpaper, put I used what I had. But I am just a noo at this mod, others might provide more insight.

Back in the hayday of the Celeron 300A Slot 1(?), we even lapped the processor. I read online how to do it, and got me some sand paper, and sanded down to the copper core, and got it all nice and shiny. Not sure if it ever improved anything but it sure was fun doing it =) Not sure if I've ever lapped a heatsink or not though, I might look into it as I'm planning on OC'ng a 1.33GHz AYHJA T-bird here real soon.

I had a FOP38.. with the delta screamer :) (worthless fan!!!!!!!!)
the first thing I ever lapped was the heatslug right on the top of my Celeron 500.. matched with a lapped FOP38 which I later used on my PIII 700@980, that crap ran cool as hell :D (still didn't overclock worth a damn though)
