I laced up the skates today for the first time in a while

Granted, I was skating with 4th and 5th graders on a church group outing, but it felt pretty good.

I gave up hockey about 10 years but I'm thinking about taking it up again.

I'll have to see if my 43 yr old body can take it!

I love ice skating, even though I'm not very good at it.

Of course, it's kind of difficult to ice skate around here. 😕

I'm in Rochester, NY so there's plenty of ice here!

Hey, if you have played hockey before it is never to late to still play. I am 35 and laced em up last year to play competitively in a full contact mens league for the first time in over 10 years and I don't regret a thing. One of the best decisions I ever made. Trust me, I know what you mean about game shape and all but you will find plenty of guys who are in the same boat as you so don't sweat it. Get out there and play! You will feel alive again!

I was a competitive speedskater up to about age 14 or so. I'd love to get back into it (on rollerblades tho, since I'm now in GA) but it's just too hilly here. I'm afraid I'd end up getting mashed by a car because I couldn't stop fast enough.

I stayed active in hockey though teaching kids 5-9 yrs. old and coaching so I continued to skate, just not with the big boys. An opportunity came up to purchase new equipement (all 50% off) again 2 years ago from a store going out of business and my wife said go for it. The only thing that you really lose is your legs. The shooting comes back and your lungs get up to speed real quick but the legs take some time. If you get the chance go for it. I only wish I could afford to play in more than one league but my son is a goalie and his equipment alone could break the bank. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. I've been running 3 - 5 miles or doing 30 minutes of non-impact cardio per day since April so my lungs are in good shape. I'm sure that there are some muscles that are unique to skating though, so I'll probably be pretty sore the first few times out.

I do need to get some new skates. Do you guys have any suggestions on what to get?

Wow, I didn't know you were that old, Rip! Learn something new about you people all the time.

I've been skating about once a week this whole winter. It's alot more fun than running, it's lower impact, it works more muscles (especially your butt muscles, which is good). I just started buying hockey equipment (never played before) and I plan on doing the pickup games and maybe join a league. I've always wanted to play hockey, but never had the money until now.

The thing that has really stoked me about ice skating is that it has basically taught me how to do something else I've always wanted to do (but never had the money): It taught me how to ski! I went skiing this weekend for only the 3rd time ever, and literally, I took a test run down the bunny slope, realized what a waste that was, and immediately took the lift up to the big hills. I skied from 11 am until 9 pm, and my legs aren't even sore (while the rest of my friends quit at about 6 oclock). Now granted I'm by no means an expert skier, but the ice skating skills transitioned over very well. The two activities use alot of the same muscles and motions. So I guess it kills two birds with one stone.

Hmmm... you're 43 and you have old skates. Do they by any chance look like this? 🙂 That's what my dad's skates look like, and he still uses them! Those things are nothing more than a piece of leather sewn to a metal blade. Talk about a good way to build ankle strength.

Wow, the skates on top look pretty ancient! My skates are about 15 years old which probably makes them similar to the skates on the bottom.

Good for you taking up the game! It's a lot of fun and great excercise too.

My 10 year old daughter has been begging me to play hockey. My mother and sister are both physically strong and my daughter got the genes. She's the only kid in her class (male or female) who can climb a hanging rope to the top and she's able to a lot of push ups (the correct way). I think that she the the potential to be a real bruiser on the ice.

Cool! I have alot of respect for girls who do typically "guy" things like that. You should really support her interest, it will be good for her character. I know at the junior levels they put the guys and girls on the same team, but what do they do once they get into high school? Put a 130 pound girl up against 200+ pound guys who are much stronger?
